General information • Prague’s history goes back to the11th century. In the past it used to be the seat of Czech kings and for some time even the capital of the Holy Roman Empire. • Today it is still an important political, cultural and economic centre. • There are many educational institutions, including Charles University, as well as international companies, the government and the parliament, and many tourist attractions. • Prague is known for its beautiful architecture with many styles (Gothic, Baroque, Art Nouveau, Cubism etc.).

Prague Castle • Prague Castle is a gem of the capital city and a symbol of Czech statehood. • It consists of three courtyards and many interesting buildings of different architectural styles (Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque ….). • The true treasure of the castle is St Vitus Cathedral. • The Office of the President of the Czech Republic is located in the New Palace. • The Old Royal Palace contains the late Gothic Vladislav Hall where the most important state events are provided. • Basilica of St George, Lobkowicz Palace, Daliborka Tower and golden lane are another important and beautiful parts of Prague Castle. St VitusCathedral • St Vitus Cathedral is a masterpiece of European Gothic sculpture. • 124 meter long cathedral was built in 14th century by Matthias of Arras and Peter Parler. • It was a place of coronation of Czech Kings. • Heart of the cathedral, the Gothic Chapel of St Wenceslas is adored by semiprecious stones and Gothic paintings and contains a chamber housing Czech coronation jewels. Charles Bridge • This bridge, originally called Stone bridge, stands on the site of the Judith Bridge, which was destroyed by a flood. • The foundation stone for the bridge was laid by Charles IV on 9thof July 1357. • Entrusted also to Peter Parler and completed by his followers in 1402. • 515 m long and 9,5 m wide bridge is based on 16 arches. • Since the 18th century the bridge has been adorned by 32 statues and sculptural groups depicting saints. Old Town Square • The natural dominant feature of Old Town Square is the Old Town Hall. Its valuable interiors include a cloister and Wedding Hall. The Town Hall Tower affords spectacular view of Prague. • Prague Astronomical Clock dating from the early 15th century is admired by tourists. 11 apostles and St Peter can be seen passing every hour. • The Kinsky Palace serves as a seat of the Director General of National Gallery. • Stone Bell house was built in the 13th century and nowadays it is used by The City Gallery for exhibitions. Answers • Dancing house - Fred and Ginger is the nickname given to the Nationale-Nederlanden building in Prague, It was designed by the Croatian-Czech architect VladoMilunić and completed in 1996. • O2 Arena - is a multi-purpose arena. Built in time for the 2004 Men's World Ice Hockey Championships, O2 Arena is the home of HC Slavia Prague. • Congress Centre – built in 1981 and was used for the conventions of the Communist Party. Today it is used for different culture events.
