  1. 1 Peter Class Schedule

  2. 6  For this is contained in Scripture: “Behold, I lay in Zion a choice stone, a precious corner stone, and he who believes in him will not be disappointed." 7  This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve, “The stone which the builders rejected, this became the very corner stone," 8  and, “A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense"; for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed. 9  But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10  for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of god; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

  3. Believers have a common salvation The purpose of our salvation 2:1-10 1. The believer’s growth 2:1-3 2. The believer’s sacrifice 2:4-8 3. The believer’s witness 2:9-10 Israel vs. Church Israel was a physical race of people, the literal descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The church is a spiritual race, the members of which share the common characteristic of faith in Christ and are both Jews and Gentiles racially. Christians are the spiritual descendants of Abraham. We are not Abraham's literal descendants, unless we are ethnic Jews, but are his children in the sense that we believe God's promises as he did. Constable

  4. 9aBut you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession Who is you referring to in this verse? In Ex19:5-6 we have a similar verse given to Israel contrast what is given Israel vs. the church • a chosen race The word race (genos) refers to a group with a common origin What is the common origin of believers in the church age? see 1 Peter 1:3 and 1:23 Israel was a physical race of people, the literal descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The church is a spiritual race. Constable

  5. 9a  But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession • a royal priesthood royal - basileios - belonging to, appointed, suitable for the king; from basileus, "a king" Lit: a kingly priesthood Every individual Christian is a priest before God. We function as priests to the extent that we worship, intercede, and minister – see 1 Peter 2:5, Rev. 1:6 Constable Israel was to be a kingdom of priests Exodus 19:6a and you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.

  6. 9a  But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession • a holy nation nation - is the translation of a Greek word meaning “a multitude of people of the same nature.” all believers have the same nature which is Christ’s nature and are holy (set apart to God) God redeemed Israel --- adopted that nation at Mt. Sinai as one that would be different from all others throughout history (Exod.19:6). Constable

  7. 9a  But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession • a people for God's own possession possession - the Greek word speaks of the unique, private, personal ownership of the saints by God. In the “Riches of God’s Grace” we see many of the possession aspects: children of God, adopted, made near, a gift from God the father to Christ, within the much more care of God etc. God wanted to dwell among the Israelites and to make them His own unique possession by residing among them (Exod. 19:5). Constable

  8. 9  But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; This verse is considered to be the great commission to the church 1 Peter 2:9 is the “great commission.” It is specifically addressed to the entire body of believers. It sets forth God’s universal purpose for all believers—God has only one will and one purpose for every Christian—it is the same for all! McCalley

  9. 9b so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; so that – lit: with a purpose that you may proclaim - exangellō - to tell out, proclaim abroad; root is to proclaim (1 John1:5) the excellencies of Him - gracious dealings, glorious attributes lit: the virtues of Him see 2 Peter 1:3 We are all to proclaim the excellencies of Him. Excellencies (areta) means “one of noble character and noble acts.” A believer is to proclaim the noble character of God and the noble acts of God. This alone forms the great commission. McCalley

  10. 9b so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who has called you out of darkness Lit : of the one having called you out of darkness this is a past point fact that God accomplished for you called – "the called" are frequently syn. with "the chosen“ (Rom. 8:28; 2 Thess. 2:13-14) Vine out of darkness Darkness aptly symbolizes the state of sin and spiritual ignorance and the consequent wretchedness of the unsaved Hiebert Col 1:13 For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, -- 1 Thess 5:4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief;

  11. 9b so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; into His marvelous light into is “eis” The word "into" refers --- to a result, that of the saints being participants of the light that God is in His nature. We are made creatures of light. Wuest marvelous - wonderful, admirable, wondrous light is “phos” - from the word to give light see 1 John 1:5-7

  12. 10 for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of god; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. first contrast in verse 10 for you once were not a people, Lit: who at one time were not a people Eph 2:12 remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. – also see 1 Peter 2:25 but now you are the people of god (lit: God’s people) Eph 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. Also this was said to Israel in Hosea 2:23

  13. 10  for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of god; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. second contrast in verse 10 you had not received mercy, with the perfect tense: you had not received mercy in the past and continued not to receive mercy into the present but now you have received mercy with the aorist passive expanded: but at a point in time in the past God acted to bestow mercy (based on our faith and His grace)
