  1. Welcome to Kindergarten A Presentation on the “Day in the Life” of a Newport Kindergartener.

  2. Building a Community It is important to provide a balance between academic rigor and social-emotional interaction. Daily routines & Common Core Standards

Common Core State Standards To ensure that all students are ready for success after high school, the Common Core State Standards establish clear, consistent guidelines for what every student should know and be able to do in math and English language arts from kindergarten through 12th grade. • http://www.corestandards.org/video/

  4. Mathematics There are two important areas of focus: • learning numbers and what numbers represent • addition and subtraction.

  5. Mathematics Expand Mathematical Thinking Through Exploration • Number Sense- comparing and order • Geometry • Sorting, Classifying, Counting and Data • Shapes • Hands-on Exploration- Math Centers • Integrating literacy which reinforce math concepts

  6. English & Language Arts • Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing • Name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.

  7. English & Language Arts • Naming and writing upper- and lowercase letters • Matching letters to sounds and using other methods to figure out unfamiliar words when reading and writing

  8. English & Language Arts • Learning and using new words • Identifying words that rhyme • Reading common words such as the, of, you, are, she, and my

  9. Social Studies • All About ME • What do we see in a neighborhood? • Who are our Community Helpers? • Ireland • Holidays

  16. Classroom Tours & Bus Ride • June 3, 4, & 5 • 9-10am • Some families will visit classrooms while others go for a ride, then the groups
