Places to Visit on Campus and In State College • Target Audience – intermediateadult ESL learners living in State College • Lesson topic – Places to Visit on Campus and in State College • Goal – As a part of a unit on vocabulary for places in the community (Penn State) and for giving and asking directions, students will be able to describe a destination on PSU campus or downtown by developing flyers in groups. • Targeted Skills – reading, writing, speaking and listening • Materials – campus/community maps, blank paper, colored pencils

3. Mini-Lesson Plan Pre-Activity • We will read a postcard from a fictitious person to a friend describing a location on campus that they will visit when the friend comes for a visit. • Class will listen and try to guess what place is described in the postcard. • We will introduce examples of giving directions. Mini-Lesson Plan (Cont’d) Core Lesson • We will describe the activity and present a sample brochure and a list of potential locations. • Students will break into pairs or groups of three and choose a location on campus or in State College for which they will develop a brochure to promote an event. • Students will use plain paper, colored pencils and maps for materials and develop a brochure that includes some artwork depicting the location, a description of an event to take place there and directions to the location from the backdoor of Ferguson Bldg. • Brochure should include the items of what, when, where, why to encourage classmates to go to that location/event. • Students will create brochure and present in a subsequent class.

5. Assessment • We will circulate around the class while students are working in groups. • During presentations and reviewing brochures, we will check for accuracy of pronunciation in speaking, and grammar and vocabulary in writing. For the next class: After presentations are completed, the brochures will be exchanged and groups will have to read another groups’ brochure and write a riddle to describe the location described in the brochure. Class will listen to riddles and identify location.
