EuroDelta: Improving Air Quality Modeling and Understanding

This project aims to improve the European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme (EMEP) model for assessing air quality. It includes two distinct exercises: EMEP Field Campaigns (ED-FC) focusing on model evaluation against field campaign data, and Retrospective Analysis (ED-RA) to assess the capacity of current models to reproduce monitored changes in air quality. The project will include sensitivity simulations, trend analysis, and validation against monitoring data.

  1. Background • Overall objectives of ED • Model inter-comparison for improving process understanding • Improvement of the EMEP model • Uncertainty assessment • Previous phases (2004 – 2009): • Evaluation against measurements (1999 & 2001) • Assessment of the Source Receptor Relationships (1999). • New phase (2010 - ) • SG meeting (01/10): Discussion on potential achievements and design of the new exercise.

  2. Two distinct exercises • EMEP FIELD CAMPAIGNS (ED-FC):“Scientific issue” • Fine spatial resolution, 3D, High Res. Emissions & other input datasets • Comparison with the field campaigns of: • RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS (ED-RA):“Policy Issue” • Capacity of current models to reproduce monitored changes in air quality • Trend analysis: from 2006  1999  1990 • 2006: 01/06 - 30/06 • 2007: 08/01 - 04/02 • 2008: 17/09 - 15/10 • 2009: 25/02 – 26/03 AQMEII  ED I  Gothenburg Protocol

  3. EuroDelta • Exercise 1: Field Campaigns

  4. ED- Field Campaigns • Focus on the evaluation of models against EMEP and other field campaigns data • Coarse nitrate parametrisation • Secondary organic aerosol modelling • Vertical profiles… • The monthly 2006 simulations will be as consistent as possible with AQMEII • Anthropogenic emissions & BC: provided • Meteorology & biogenic emissions: free • Proposed spatial resolution: 15-20 km or lower (?) • Runs may be performed for single campaigns and on reduced spatial domains (sub-EU) • Full model data required (3D, extended species list…) • Submission, data-storage, processing and analysis of the results based on the ENSEMBLE system at JRC

  5. ED-FC: set-up & issues • Input / Output data: • Anthropogenic emissions: MACC/GMES/TNO • Temporal profiles: ED • Network Monitoring data (EMEP, AIRBASE) • Boundary conditions: GMES (2006) – Other years (?) • Meteorology: Modeling groups / INERIS • Model output processing and analysis tool: JRC • Issues: • Preparation of the Field Campaigns datasets & selection of species/variables of interest for model validation. • Boundary conditions and emissions for years beyond 2006

  6. ED-FC: Tentative workplan • 2010 • Overall validation within AQMEII (full year 2006 on entire European domain) • Preparation/formatting of Field Campaigns data for all years • Preparation of all required input data (meteo – emissions – monitoring) for all years • 2011 • Launch of ED-FC for all available years • Sensitivity simulations: Biogenic compounds & spatial resolution

  7. EuroDelta • Exercise 2: Retrospective analysis

  8. ED- Retrospective analysis • Three yearly simulations should be performed by each participant on entire European domain (1990 – 1999 – 2006) with spatial resolution: 15-20 km • Emission inventories might be scaled to be consistent with EMEP national sectoral totals and temporal factors adapted if required. • Validation against monitoring data restricted to species covered by the Protocol: O3, SO2, NOx… for which measurement data are available • Reduced dataset (2D…) required from modeling groups • Submission, data-storage, processing and analysis of the results based on the “DELTA” system at JRC

  9. ED-RA: set-up & issues • Input / Output data: • Anthropogenic emissions: MACC/GMES/TNO scaled to EMEP • Temporal profiles: ED • Network Monitoring data: EMEP & AIRBASE • Boundary conditions: GMES & measurement data (?) • Meteorology: Modeling groups / INERIS • Model output processing and analysis tool: JRC • Issues: • Preparation of consistent boundary conditions and emission inventories, especially for 1990 and 1999.

  10. ED-RA: Tentative workplan • 2010 • Preparation of required input data for all years • Launch of the exercise by end of year • 2011 • Analysis of results (early 2011) • Sensitivity simulations: Meteorology, spatial resolution…

  11. Set-up of 2 working groups • WG1: Definition of specific modeling validation objectives according to FC data availability. Data formatting • WG2: Emission inventories and boundary conditions: scaling, trends…
