  1. Earthquakes!! earthquakes By Adriana Velasco And Allison Bogisich By: Adriana velasco and Allison Bogisich

  2. What is an earthquake? The definition • Shaking and vibration at the surface of the earth resulting from underground movement along a fault plane from volcanic activity or the movement of plates beneath the earths surface. • That earthquakes only occur on fault lines, and the ground shakes side to side. What we thought

  3. Earthquake Safe Buildings Objective: To create an earthquake safe building that will be limber and move with the force of the earthquake, but not completely fall over and kill everyone inside. Good Building Bad Building 

  4. Assignment and Our Thinking The goal was to create a model building that would be able to with stand the force of the of various earthquakes. Our tactics: -Allison:Ithought that having cross braces, but some flexibility would allow my building to stay up longer -Adriana: I just wanted to build something really tough and that wouldn’t break easily, based off the fails that Jyothi had shown us

  5. Allison and her building Adriana and her building Seismograph- used to measure the displacement of an earthquake. Which in this case is measuring the displacement of our buildings Adriana’s building after test Allison’s broken building and Jyothi’s building The worlds first shake table at the Richmond Field Station

  6. Results • Adriana’s building withstood the earthquake for the longest time, but in the second trial it broke right off its foundation • Allison’s building was the first to break, but was able to stay up the remainder of the tests • Jyothi’s building was the only one able to with stand the high intensity

  7. What we learned from the results • The mass and height of the building affects the buildings ability to resist the effect of an earthquake • When creating a building its important to have crossbars on the side of the building - force flow - resistance - plan to fail

  8. Is this all important? • California has multiple earthquakes each year -Earthquake are a common natural disaster • Public safety is extremely important - its is always important to be prepared and well equipped from any event
