Christopher Paul Curtis • Born in Flint Michigan in 1953 • Loved to read but lamented as a child that there weren’t enough books with African American characters like him • Began working at the General Motors factory while he attended Michigan State University. He continued working there for many years • Working at the factory gave him free time to begin writing • Eventually took a year off to write The Watsons go to Birmingham • The inspiration for the characters in his book developed from people he has know

Where did Christopher Paul Curtis get the idea for this novel? • His inspiration for The Watsons go to Birmingham-1963 came from a trip from Michigan to Florida that he made with his own children. He was determined to make the trip in 24 hours! • What problems could you see with this plan? • How could you make a trip like this successful?

  6. What does Christopher Paul Curtis say about this book? • The Watsons Go to Birmingham--1963 is the story of an ordinary family, but a family caught in an important moment in American history. By telling the story through the eyes of ten-year-old Kenny, I hope the book can be a tool for teachers to help students understand that history does not happen to strangers but to people just like them. • What do you think he means when he says, “history does not happen to strangers but to people just like them”?

  7. Work Session • Read chapter one of The Watsons go to Birmingham-1963. • Answer your chapter one guided reading questions in COMPLETE sentences as you read. Make sure you number your answers! • Contrast the Watson parents’ backgrounds. • Show how Mr. Watson points out some issues in Alabama. • Analyze how Mrs. Watson tries to put a positive spin on life in the South. • Generalize why Kenny thinks that Byron is playing a trick on him when he calls for help. • Assess why Kenny does not fight back when Byron plays How to Survive a Blizzard. • Infer how Byron would have probably reacted if Kenny had been stuck to the mirror. • Examine why Kenny had to pour the water on Byron’s lips. • Begin your chapter 1-3 vocab.
