  1. X-Ray Rietveld refinement of g-Ge3N4 Ge3N4: a new nitride spinel 12 GPa 1000 C b-Ge3N4 g-Ge3N4 In situ X-ray of Ge3N4 at 26 GPa during heating. The highly broadened spectrum from the low pressure b phase is replaced by the g spectrum between 450 and 600 C A new cubic spinel-structured phase of Ge3N4 (g-phase) was synthesized at high pressures and temperatures in the diamond anvil cell (DAC) and multi-anvil press assemblies. This represents the first nitride spinel and the first example of any material with germanium in octahedral coordination with nitrogen. The new phase can be recovered to ambient conditions where the structure was confirmed by Reitveld refinement.. Scratch tests indicate g-Ge3N4 is harder than sapphire. The bulk modulus of g-Ge3N4 is extremely high, K = 295 GPa, which is even greater than that of b-Si3N4.
