The Vision of an Educated AlbertanAn Engaged Thinker and Ethical Citizen with an Entrepreneurial Spirit What are we as a school/district currently doing to empower EVERY student to become an engaged thinker, and ethical citizen with an entrepreneurial spirit? How can we build on what we as a school/district are currently doing to empower EVERY student to become an engaged thinker, and ethical citizen with an entrepreneurial spirit? What do we need to do more of? To bring Inspiring Education to life and empower every student to become an engaged thinker, and ethical citizen with an entrepreneurial spirit? What do we need to do less of?

The 3 E’s (Engaged, Ethical, Entrepreneurial) Engaged Thinker – Alberta must cultivate students with an inquisitive, engaged mind.  Students that are prepared to ask “why?” and think critically about the answers they receive. Ethical Citizen - Knowing the answer is not enough.   Our children and grandchildren must be ethical, compassionate and respectful to truly grow and thrive. Entrepreneurial Spirit – To shape innovative ideas into real-world solutions, our education system should develop motivated, resourceful and resilient citizens. Alberta would do well to encourage our students to be bold, embrace leadership and actively seek new opportunities.

Teachers will need to... • use digital technologies purposefully as students design, create and share knowledge • become more purposeful in their approach to technology and assistive technology to support innovation and discovery, not simply to aid teaching • integrate technology and assistive technology into the learning environment to support all learners’ innovation • facilitate access to a wide variety of resources across multiple literacies • design learning activities where students use and extend their knowledge both as individuals and as group members How will you and your school keep pace with current developments, tools and techniques in managing information?

Digital Citizenship Embed Digital Citizenship • Be sure staff models DC and is 100% on board • What school policies do you have? • Are parents up to speed with DC? • What digital footprint have you left? Without a strong Digital Citizenship foundation, schools can not effectively use 21st Century Learning to a point where students will have their own devices including using cell phones and other mobile devices.

  10. 10 Tech Tips • Encourage the use of technology in your schools • support and encourage teachers who want to go to conferences and participate in staff development • Become paperless – email, do not print • Teacher planning should be electronic • Request email addresses from all parents • Insist that all teachers create a class Web Page • Attend technology conferences and pd yourself, see what is happing out there! • What is happening in your school and district? Awareness! Lead, don’t follow. • How up to date is your technology in your school?

  11. 10 Tech Tips • Use Email Creatively! • Embed images or videos that represent the message’s content! • If you are sending a message to praise a staff member insert a motivating graphic! • By sharing positive messages, important updates, meaningful links you’ll be a model for the entire school community!

  12. 10 Tech Tips 3. Deliver Dynamic Presentations • Deliver your staff meetings electronically! • Deliver your parent meetings electronically! • Quit wasting PAPER! Share it electronically as a file or link • Embed relevant photos, or motivational videos! • Have interactive slides! Technologies which you could use for meetings with agendas and slides: • PowerPoint (old school but a start) • Start blowing them away with SMART Notebook! • Really blow them away with Prezi, Slideshare, and Google Presentation!!!!

  13. 10 Tech Tips • Use Mobile Technology in Walk-Throughs • Bring your iPad, tablet or smart phone • Allows you to send immediate feedback This type of modeling may seem unrelated to actual instruction, but just using an iPad to make walk-throughs more effective and efficient demonstrates a leader’s belief that technology can have a positive impact and may reduce fear among technophobic faculty.

Become a TWIT! • You will find more information and professional learning on Twitter in 1 hour than you could in an entire year of workshops! • Use your professional name and use an account for professional use, keep a separate personal one. • Follow, Follow, Follow!!!! And you will be followed • Retweet, Retweet, Retweet!!!! And you will be followed • Follow #hashtags • Send tweets to colleagues using @somebody • Twitter for Educators Sheet

  17. 10 Tech Tips • Principals Message on School Page • Put your personal touch right on the Front Page! • Deliver a message frequently • Deliver the message on a scheduled regular basis • Be able to do it remotely! • Allow for emails or chats from community

  18. 10 Tech Tips • Develop your own webpage! • You can use this for your class, staff or parents • Announcements, messages, CELEBRATIONS!!!!

  19. 10 Tech Tips • Create a Blog! • Use this as a reflective journal • Share your latest ideas and research with your school staff or parents • Take ½ per week to view twitter for 15 minutes and write your blog for 15 minutes! • Well worth our time! And your doing research and PD at the same time!!
