    2. Engineering Design Process The process of creating a set of specifications for a product that fulfills the design specifications.

    3. Design Criteria What is the problem ? What is the purpose ? Who is the user ? What are the customer needs ? What are some existing products out there already? What are the shape/size limitations ? What are the material requirements ? What are the cost limitations? What is the manufacturing time ? Product support needs? Estimated product life ?

    4. Design Framework

    5. Design Brief A clear and concise description of the problem. Identification of the needs to solve the problem. Listing of any design constraints (limits). Such as function, appearance, time, legal, cost, etc.

    6. Investigation Research of the problem. Information & data collection. Analysis of information & data as it applies to the problem.

    7. Ideas Brainstorming process. Generation of possible solutions to the design problem.

    8. Design Selection Evaluation of the ideas against the problem specifications. Selection of most promising design that you think will solve the problem.

    9. Design Refinement At this stage of the design process the initial ideas are further defined and refined with the use of drawing and modeling techniques. This stage also forms a feedback loop with the design analysis stage. After the designs are analyzed, they may undergo further refinement of their design, which will then undergo more analysis.

    10. Design Analysis The selected design undergoes analysis to determine the degree to which is will solve the problem Mechanical properties of design will be evaluated. This can be accomplished through drawings, modeling, mass property analysis, finite element analysis, simulations, etc. This stage also forms feedback loop with the design refinement stage. After the design is analyzed, it may then force the design to undergo additional refinement.

    11. Final Design Selection After a review of all the data and design information, the final solution is selected.

    12. Implementation Formulation of a plan to include all phases of product manufacture. Such as…… machine process assembly process packaging process repair process disposal process

    13. Documentation This refers to the production of drawings to describe how the part or process is to be produced.
