  1. Welcome!

  2. Studying a World Language at PCMS What exactly is the course that my child will be taking? How does the high school credit work? How difficult is this course? If this course is not a good match for my child, what are my choices?

  3. What exactly is the course that my child will be taking? In 7th and 8th grade, your child will be completing Level I of either Spanish, German or French – for a total of 72 weeks! The 7th Grade portion of this course corresponds to one-half of the high school level course of the same title. (In the high schools the students take the same course in 18 weeks.)

  4. What exactly is the course that my child will be taking? In 8th grade, your child will be completing Level I of Latin – for a total of 36 weeks! (In the high schools the students take the same course in 18 weeks.)

  5. How difficult is this course and what is the profile of a Successful World Language Student? This course is drastically different from your student’s other courses. It may be the first time he/she must put forth extra effort in his/her studying.

  6. A successful student….1) Is a motivated self-starter who wants to study a World Language.2) Studies 20 min/night & does every homework assignment.

  7. 3) Understands that study habits are different from those used for success in other classes, and are implemented consistently & daily.

  8. 4) Can learn and put to use techniques that will at once reinforce World Language skills and those taught in the core classes, i.e. lang. arts, math, social studies & science.

  9. 5) Knows the importance of neatness and organization.6) Is ready for a class that is based in analytical thinking skills

  10. And finally…7) Is prepared to use a high school text, follow high school curriculum, ready to take responsibility for his/her own work.

  11. How does the high school credit work?

  12. After your student passes every semester with a grade of 70 or better,

  13. the semester grades in 8th Grade only are then placed on his/her permanent High School Transcripts

  14. Each semester grade is a distinct mark on the transcript.

  15. At the end of the 8th Grade Year, the grades for those 2 semesters of Level I, and the cumulative grade point average, will appear on the student’s high school and middle school transcripts.

  16. If this course is not a good match for my child, what are my choices? First, please remember that taking a World Language in Middle School is an ELECTIVE. It is not a requirement!

  17. DeKalb County states that students in middle school should earn an 80, or better, each semester that a World Language is taken.

  18. By earning an 80, or better, the student will be well prepared to successfully continue with the next level.

  19. At the 9-week mark in the FIRST semester if a student has a grade below 80, a parent will be notified in order to discuss how to best proceed.

  20. 7th GradeStudents have the option of dropping the course at the end of the 1st semester, or 2nd semester, of that first year.Usually it’s advised that if a student is struggling with core courses, that the World Language should be dropped in order to improve in those areas.

  21. VERY IMPORTANT!! If you choose to have your 8th grade student remain in the course with an average below 80 at 9 weeks in the first semester, he/she will NOT be given the opportunity to drop it again. The grade that is subsequently earned at the end of each semester (8thgrade only) will be placed on the permanent high school transcripts.

  22. 7th & 8th GradeIf a student, and parent, decide to drop the course, at the 9-week mark, no grades will appear on the high school transcript and the student will be placed in another course that the counselor recommends.

  23. 8th GradeIf the course is dropped, when registering for high school courses in the spring:Be sure that you register for the Level I course. Your student will be studying the same curriculum. This will allow the student to fill any gaps and to strengthen his/her basic skills in the language.

  24. Typically, those students who drop the course in middle school and begin again in high school are very successful. ****Remember: the last thing you want as a parent is to have your student begin his/her high school career with a grade of C, D or even an F on the permanent transcripts.

  25. How to obtain answers to your questions……….. Please send all questions via First Class e-mail. Go to the Peachtree main webpage Spanish: J. Tomaszewski Spanish/German/Latin: D. Downer Spanish/French: M. McKenzie
