What Is Poetry ?

A kind of language that says more and says it more intensely than does ordinary language. It communicates information and is concerned with experiences.

The EagleAlfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892)

He clasps the crag with crooked hands;

Close to the sun in lonely lands,

Ringed with the azure world, he stands.

The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;

He watches from his mountain walls,

And like a thunderbolt he falls.

The calm,

Cool face of the river

Asked me for a kiss.

Suicide’s NoteLangston Hughes (1902-1967)

The calm,

Cool face of the river

Asked me for a kiss.
