  1. 1. Title of the lesson plan Hot planet earth – Volcanoes

  2. 2. Cognitive areas • The lesson plan involves the cognitive area "Volcanoes", which falls in line with the Curriculum in Geography lesson in A and B class in Gymnasium. • 3. Knowledge content strands • Natural environment • Structure of the Earth • The lithospheric plates and their movements • The endogenous forces and their events (earthquakes, volcanoes) • Brief geological history and tectonic regions of Europe and Greece • Volcanoes and seismic activity in Europe and Greece • General objectives (knowledge, skills, attitudes and values) • Factors of the environment that affect the lives of the people of Europe. • 4. General purposes • To study the interactions and interdependencies which develop between people and natural environment. • To be familiar with scientific tools, which allow inferences about invisible phenomena (such as geology) through the visible effects on the surface of the earth. • To develop attitudes necessary for understanding, acceptance, communication, cooperation and solidarity with other nations with the support of ICT’s.

  3. 5. Objectives • A. As to the subject students should be able to: • Learn about the lithosphere and lithospheric plates, relative motion, consequences and • endogenous forces (volcanoes, earthquakes) • Interpret the terrain of Europe with the help of geological procedures of the • distant past. •  Recognize the dynamic nature of world around them and change the form of time. • Understand, in simple terms, the formation of volcanoes • Understand the role of volcanic eruptions in the formation of Earth's terrain. • Know the structure of a volcano • Learn that our country is a volcanic one • Learn the effects of volcanoes (negative and positive) • Include volcanoes eruptions in natural disasters and understand that we must • learn to live with them. • Construct a volcano • Become familiar with the use of software • B. In the learning process• Cooperate and interact to achieve the proposed objectives• Be involved in collecting and processing information and gain the experience • of exploration information from the Web.

  4. 6. Materials 1. Books about volcanoes. 2. Movie from National Geographic “The wonderful planet - child of fire”. 3. Software - a combination of software categories.During the lesson is used software of "Geology-Geography A and B 'school' also other computing environments such as visualizations, simulations and modeling software and internet applications. 4. Crafts materials

  5. 7. Duration To implement the lesson is required 6 class periods hours. • 8. Class organization and infrastructure required • To carry out the lesson is necessary the computer lab with Internet connection. • 9. Teaching process • Forstudents withdisabilities shouldbe enabled:  • Teachingflexibility toa variety of proposed activities,so thegoalis approachedin • differentways. • Multi-sensoryapproach targets. • A variety of teaching aidsand materials. • Depending onthecognitivelevel, the choice of appropriatescientificmodel.

  6. During the A phase (duration 1 class period hour), initially we start with photos of volcanoes eruptions which will become the occasion for discussion (books).

  7. After this, students watch a movie from the National Geographic “The wonderful planet- child of fire” in order to realize that volcanoes activity is connecting with earthquakes and this energy comes from inside the earth.

  8. In the B phase (duration 2 class periods), students explored information about the earth structure and the formation of a volcano. Specifically, they use:a) Software of "Geology-Geography A 'school' of the earth movements of tectonic plates, and the game play Pangea. Alternatively, they show video about the inner construction of the earth, the motions of lithospheric plates and the formation of volcanoes in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91NV0bq4GO8&feature=youtu.be b) Selected websites: http://www.mykpe.gr/documents/1246432185-HFAISTEIA.pdf http://volcano.oregonstate.edu/index.html  c)See a movie of an erupting volcanohttp://www.geology.sdsu.edu/how_volcanoes_work/Home.html

  9. In the C phase (duration 1 class period) students using software (section of major volcanoes of our country) learn that our country has six volcanoes and that the seismic arc coincides with the volcanic one.

  10. In the D phase (time 1 class period). In this step we refer to the effects of volcanoes. First, we ask the opinion of children. We understand that apart from the obvious negative effects, there are positive. We mention some examples of disasters such as volcanoes destruction of the Minoan civilization (Santorini volcano). To move to the positive impact we set the children a framework for reflection. The aim is to wonder why people choose to live in such dangerous areas. They explore the educational material about the effects of volcanoes in the following internet site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcano#mw-head

  11. In the E phase (time 1 class period) students construct a volcano. They build a Stratovolcano volcano type. Materials for the construction of the volcanο: Cardboard is used as a mold to form the volcano, Clay, Adhesive tape, Colors, Brushes Take the model outside and paint it to make model look more volcanic, add a coat of spray glue and a sprinkle star over the volcano.

  12. 10. WorksheetsAll students check their knowledge with worksheets. 1. Fill in the blanks with the missing words.(extinguished, explosion, earthquakes, creating, sinking, lava, active, island, volcanic)The eruption of a volcano may mean covering an area with______________, the ____________ of a new rock or _____________, the ____________ or a portion of the mountain, a part of the____________ of land in the sea.The eruption of volcanoes follow strong _____________Soils formed from volcanic _________________ called _____________. The volcanoes are divided into ________________ and _____________ 2. Look at the picture and write what is distinguished in volcanoes. Cross-section through a stratovolcano (vertical scale is exaggerated): • Large magma chamber • Bedrock 3. Conduit (pipe) • 4. Base 5. Sill 6. Dike 7. Layers of ash emitted by the volcano 8. Flank • 9. Layers of lava emitted by the volcano 10. Throat 11. Parasitic cone 12. Lava flow 13. Vent • 14. Crater15. Ash cloud

  13. 11. As an extension of the script students can deal with disasters that have caused volcanoes in Greece as the destruction of the Minoan civilization (Santorini volcano).

  14. This lesson plan contacted by Marianthi Baka – teacher of biology in the Special Gymnasium and Lyceum of Athens. The students who involved in the constuction of the volcano areAsimakis Christos and Gouranios Nikos
