  1. What is GIS? • GIS: Integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of Geographically referenced information. Thousands of organizations use GIS to solve problems and improve processes.

  2. What information does a topographic map contain? They show mountains and certain elevations. That can help find certain places and help locate lost people.

  3. GIS helps in real-life problems too! • Police can tap into a GIS system program to instantly get historical information on every crime that occurred in a particular part of the city. • Firefighters can get the exact location of all fire hydrants in the area, and all gas stations.

  4. Crime beware!!!! • In some big cities, police can enter an address of a crime in a computer and automatically get detailed maps and information from police data bases to get everything from the size, occupancy, and layout of houses, right down to the locations of doors and potential hiding places.
