  1. Careers that Involve Work with Children and/or Families Objectives: List career opportunities involving work with children and families. Compare careers related to working with children and/or families to other careers. Explain ways to make a positive impression during a job interview.

  2. What is a Job? • A job is a paid position of regular employment.

  3. What is a Career? • An occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person's life and with opportunities for progress.

  4. Explain the difference between a Job and a Career. • A job is something you do simply to earn money; a career is a series of connected employment opportunities.

  5. Full-time vs. Part-time • Part Time work is any amount of time worked less than 40 in one week. Full- Time is at least 40 hours of work a week.

  6. What is an entrepreneur? • A person who organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking on financial risk to do so.

  7. What is Job Sharing? • Job sharing is an employment arrangement where typically two people are retained on a part-time or reduced-time basis to perform a single job.

  8. What is Comp. Time? • Time off that is granted to a worker as compensation for working overtime. (More than 40 hours in one week)

  9. What is Telecommuting? • When one works from home, communicating with the workplace using equipment such as telephones, fax machines, and modems.

  10. What is a Resume? • A resume is a brief written account of personal educational, professional qualifications and experience, prepared by an applicant for a job. • Example 1 • Example 2

  11. What a reference list? • A list of friends, family, employers and co-workers and their contact information to be used to verify an applicant’s status.

  12. What is a Job interview? • Interview – An interview process to determine whether an applicant is suitable for a position of employment.
