About the MFC • Began meeting in May 2007 • Participants include community members, professionals, and governments officials • During our meetings we discuss various aspects of the food system including access to healthy, affordable food; land use planning, local food production and procurement, public health, and policy initiatives

Metrics • Contact: Gretchen Mead, gretchen.mead@victorygardeninitiative.org • Works to ensure the Milwaukee Food Council is making progress toward its broad food system goals. • In partnership with the University of Wisconsin Extension, we are seeking to transfer our values of health, social justice, economic prosperity, ecological sustainability, and cultural inclusion into measurable deliverables that will help track the successes of Milwaukee’s complex food system.

Urban Agrictulture • Contact: Bruce Wiggins, 414.431.1585 • Promotes the growing and distribution of healthy food along with advocacy and policy development • Has worked on the "honey and eggs" ordinances to allow bees and hens in the City of Milwaukee and have worked with the City of Milwaukee on ordinance changes affecting urban agriculture • Participants come from a variety of agencies in the region and bring a variety of perspectives, including growing food, land trusting, permaculture, community gardening, neighborhood revitalization, health, and nutrition. • Participants also join other Food Council work groups to cross-fertilize ideas, strategies, and actions.

Economic Development • Contact: Kristi Luzar, kristi@uedawi.org, 414.562.9904 • The Food Enterprise Development Network (FEDN) promotes equitable, economic development in southeastern Wisconsin communities. • The Urban Economic Development Association of Wisconsin, Inc. (UEDA) is facilitating this effort with administrative and project support. • FEDN explores the development of a food hub that would support important links among producers, distribution points, processing sites, etc. • Support local food entrepreneurs to grow their businesses and developing the economic case for small-scale food enterprises in local markets.

Healthy Food Access • Contact: Venice Williams, venicewb@msn.com, 414.687.0122 • Addresses issues that improve access to healthy food in Milwaukee neighborhoods • Highlights and supports community innovations and program • Strong emphasis on low-income, underserved neighborhoods in an effort to provide avenues to affordable, nourishing foods • Encourages local growers, community advocates, neighborhood grocers, concerned residents, and policymakers to be a work group participant

  10. Institute for Urban Agriculture and Nutrition • IUAN is envisioned as a unique collaboration between academic and community partners that will accelerate the development of urban agriculture, grow the urban food economy, and improve the health and nutrition of urban residents.  • Hrewout of meeting in 2011 between Will Allen, Founder and CEO of Growing Power, and Chancellor Mike Lovell of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
