Students, you already know the letters of the alphabet have sounds. We can use our knowledge of these sounds to read regular words. But sometimes, some words do not follow these sounds. The Long Journey of the Butterfly The butterfly surely gets around. In winter, the butterfly starts its rough journey to Mexico. Millions of butterflies make the journey and huddle on straight tree branches that become bent due to the weight of the butterflies. Journey, surely, rough, straight, and weight are all irregular words that are hard to spell because you cannot sound them out.

Before Trains and Cars Before machines like trains or cars, people used covered wagons to take long trips across the United States. Their journey was rough and long. There were no roads, just trails made by other wagons. There were very few bridges so most had to go straight through the water. It was a dangerous, long, and rough journey. Machines is an irregularly spelled word because it cannot be sounded out.
