The City ofLondon • The City of London is one of the world’s leading financial and commercial centres • During the 19th century, the City was the world's number one business centre • At the heart of the City is the Bank of England • Manylarge commercial banks, the London Stock Exchange and a huge international insurance market led by Lloyd’s are all located in the City • However, London now has two financial centres: Canary Wharf has become a competitor to/ an extension of the traditional City of London

CanaryWharf • Canary Wharf is a relatively new financial and business district (construction began in 1988), situated 4.0 km to the east of the City • It is located in the West India Docks on the Isle of Dogs (which once was one of the busiest ports in the world) • The docks were closed in 1980 and several projects were launched to stimulate the redevelopment of the area • Canary Wharf now contains around 1,300,000 m2 of office and retail space, and around 90,000 people work there • Numerous banks and professional services firms are located in Canary Wharf, including Barclays, Citigroup, Credit Suisse, J. P. Morgan, MetLife and Morgan Stanley
