  1. 1: TOWARDS CIVILIZATIONChapter 1 Sections 1-3 • ACTIVITIES: • A) Create a timeline of early civilization. Must include 10 events and at least 2 illustrations • B) Using a T-chart list 5 differences and 5 similarities between humans and animals • C) Create 5 bumper-stickers you think early humans might wear on their animal skins • D) Create a Stone Age village: Describe the village, name it, and come up w/a list of 5 rules for your village, how you would keep order, and deal with those who acted disorderly • E) List 20 tools you use in every day life? Write a paragraph on what it would be like to live without tools, how do you think early humans coped? List 5 tools you could make with wood, and 5 tools you could make with stone.

Second paragraph describe what laws do for a society and which are most important. Final paragraph explain why laws are needed and how laws have changed over time. • B) Using a Venn Diagram compare and contrast Sumer and Egyptian societies • C) Create a pamphlet “selling” a nonbeliever on the idea of Judaism. List major beliefs and at least 2 illustrations • D) Create a one page interview between a news reporter and Moses

  4. 4: EARLY CIVILIZATIONS IN INDIA AND CHINAChapter 3 Sections 1-3 Chapter 4 Sections 1-2 • ACTIVITIES: • A) Are walls designed more to keep people in or to keep people out? Explain your position and whether this is a good or bad thing in 2 paragraphs • B) Create 5 pieces of graffiti that may have been placed by Chinese people or invaders during the time period on the Great Wall • C) Using a poster illustrate the Hindu belief of life, death, and rebirth, and eventually becoming one with nature • D) Make a list of earthly possessions you feel like you could not live without in one column. In a second column have the Buddha convince you why you do not need these possessions to reach nirvana

  5. 5: Philosophy and Religion of India and China Chapter 4 Sections 3-5 • ACTIVITIES: • A) What would a Daoist from that time period say if they were dropped in modern day America? 3 paragraphs • B) On a T-chart compare a Daoism's idea of success to that of an average American • C) Create 5 bumper-stickers honoring the wisdom of Confucius • D) What would Confucius have to say about modern day American life? 3 paragraphs

  6. 6: THE GREEK WORLD Chapter 5 Sections 1-4 • ACTIVITIES: • A) Create a Greek travel brochure. Include: a map, what tourist should go see, the strong and weak points of the civilization. • B) Create a timeline of Greek civilization. Include: 10 events and at least 2 illustrations • C) Odysseus is one of the first mythical superheroes we know about in history. Make a list of his major features and then compare him to a modern day superhero. Draw what you think he may have looked like

  7. 7: ROMAN WORLD IN THE HELLENISTIC AGE Chapter 5 Sections 5 Chapter 6 Sections 1-3 • ACTIVITIES: • A) Take a role (a Roman patrician, plebeian, soldier, woman, or citizen whose land was conquered by the Romans) Write a letter to a friend describing your life and the important developments taking place around you. List pros and cons and hopes for the future. One page • B) Make a list of at least 10 events discussed in that were achievements in the Roman World. Include descriptions and discuss their importance. • C) What things in civilization are important to focus on and which are not important to focus on? (examples arts, literature, math, science, law, architecture, history, philosophy, medicine)

  8. 8: THE ROMAN EMPIRE AND CHRISTIANITY Chapter 6 Sections 4-5 • ACTIVITIES: • A) Make a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting Christianity to another religion of your choosing • B) Using pictures only describe Christianity, Buddhism, and Judaism • C) List the causes of the fall of the Roman Empire. Could any of this been avoided if so how? Make comparisons to our own society, are we headed in the same direction? One page/3 paragraphs

  9. 9: THE WORLD OF THE AMERICAS Chapter 7 Sections 1-3 • ACTIVITIES: • A) Create a four part Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting Olmec, Mayan, Incan, and Aztec culture • B) Create a museum display of ancient American society. Include drawings of artifacts important for day to day life, a life story of the typical day of a person alive back then, and the rise and fall of that society.

  10. 10: FEUDALISM AND THE EARLY MIDDLE AGES Chapter 8 Sections 1-4 • ACTIVITIES: • A) You are a time traveler going back to the Middle Ages (choose a role: lord, vassal, noblewoman, or serf) Make a list of what you need to go back. Include such things as behavior, responsibilities, dress, etc. • B) The Medieval Church often stressed faith over reason. Define faith and reason. Is it possible to have faith and reason in religion, use science with religion as an example • C) Create a timeline of the early Middle Ages. Use 10 dates and 2 illustrations

  11. 11: THE HIGH MIDDLE AGES Chapter 9 Sections 1-3 • ACTIVITIES: • A) Draw the perfect Holy Roman Empire monarch and describe his mannerisms and how he should treat his subjects • B) Describe what you think is your most important human right. Write a front page news story about the signing of the Magna Carta and human rights • C) Pretend you are a knight riding off to fight the Crusades, write a letter to your true love describing what it feels like to fight for such a noble cause. • D) Create a front page news story about the horrors witnessed during the Crusades

  12. 12: THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE IN CRISIS Chapter 9 Sections 4-5 Chapter 10 Section 1 • ACTIVITIES: • A) Write a one page diary entry of one of the following: Medieval university student, a Catholic priest, or a woman friend of Christine de Pizan • B) Imagine people around you were dying and you didn’t know why, how would that affect you? Pretend you are running a Medieval hospital. How would you treat patients you knew were going to die? How would you keep order in such a chaotic situation? • C) Create a 2D or 3D model of the Church of Hagia Sophia including mosaic art to be displayed on the walls

  13. 13: RUSSIAN AND EUROPEAN INVASIONS Chapter 10 Sections 2-3 • ACTIVITIES: • A) As a Muslim standing on the city wall of Baghdad in 1258, describe your terror as you see the massive Mongol armies approach your city • B) You Were There: write a first hand account as one of the following: FATIMA – the rich first wife of the sultan of Baghdad ALI – a Muslim solider who saw the main Mongol attack and escaped alive SUIMAN –a Muslim merchant who saw Baghdad being burned to the ground IBNSINA – a scholar who saw the great scientific medical and mathematical writings of Islam going up in flames TAMARIN –a strong female Mongol warrior who participated in the attack on Baghdad • C) Create a timeline of sections 2-3. Include at least 10 events and 2 illustrations. Remember invasions, actions of leaders, changes in power

  14. 14: THE RISE OF ISLAM Chapter 11 Sections 1-3 • ACTIVITIES: • A) Using a Venn Diagram compare and contrast the teachings of Islam to another religion of your choice • B) Make a brochure used to convert people from their religion to Islam. Explain why your religion is better and beneficial to them. Use at least 2 illustrations • C) Create a museum display of Muslim heritage. Have displays dedicated to each of the following: social classes, economy, art, literature, and science

  15. 15: Chapter 11 Sections 4-5 Chapter 12 Sections 1-2 • ACTIVITIES: • A) Create a “Cause and Effect Web” showing the developments that occurred in India as a result of Muslim invasions. Name changes that occurred then list the cause and effect of those changes • B) Create a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting the Ottoman and Safavid Empires • C) Create a museum display on the people of Africa. Make three galleries: 1, prehistory 2, the kingdom of Nubia, 3, civilizations of Northern Africa. Include descriptions and at least one illustration for each • D) Imagine you are living in a West African village during the 1500s. Write a one page diary entry as one of the following: a caravan leader, someone on a pilgrimage to Mecca, a marketplace trader, a student in Timbuktu, a Benin sculptor

  16. 16: ROUTES AND TRADITIONS OF AFRICA Chapter 12 Sections 3-4 • ACTIVITIES: • A) Come up with evidence to support the following facts: a) Ethiopia was influenced by several religious traditions b) Trade routes played a key role in the rise of Axum c) The blending of cultures occurred in East African city-states d) The prosperity of Great Zimbabwe was based on a variety of economic activities • B) Describe typical African family patterns. If you were an African in this time period how would you provide for your family. Describe how you would do this and why this would be your choice

  17. 17: CHINESE AND KOREAN EMPIRES Chapter 13 Sections 1-3 • ACTIVITIES: • A) Using a Venn Diagram, compare and contrast the Tang and Song dynasties • B) Using styles popular during the Tang and Song dynasties create a work of art or a write a poem • C) Chose one of the following: Genghiz Khan, Kublai Khan, Marco Polo, Zhu Yuanzhang or Zheng He. Create a list of five questions and answers to ask your character about their goals, methods, and achievements • D) Essay: How did China influence Korea and how did Korea preserve its own identity? (Three paragraph minimum)

  18. 18: JAPAN SHOWS ITSELF Chapter 13 Sections 4-5 • ACTIVITIES: • A) Essay: Choose two ways in which geography affected Japanese life and culture and describe how (three paragraph minimum) • B) Create a children's book on Japan. Include pages on the following with illustrations: warriors, noble class, peasants, artisans and merchants, invasions, the arts, Zen Buddhism
