  1. Second European Space Weather Week, ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands, 14-18 November 2005 European Digital Upper Atmosphere Server DIAS A European service for the specification and the prediction of the state of the ionosphere, funded by the eContent programme of the European Commission

  2. Second European Space Weather Week, ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands, 14-18 November 2005 Objectives • To develop a pan-European digital data collection on the state of the upper atmosphere based on historical data collections and on the real-time information provided by several European ionospheric stations. • To develop a new digital server for the management and distribution of this collection, based on cutting edge technologies. • To develop all necessary actions for the efficient promotion of this pan-European digital data collection and new added value products, to the European and worldwide market.

  3. Second European Space Weather Week, ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands, 14-18 November 2005 DIAS users’ requirements survey Based on a) web-questionnaire http://www.iono.noa.gr/DIAS b) meetings with users and experts • The most highly requested product seems to be the real time and historical ionograms, for both research and operational purposes (preferable time resolution: on demand and hourly). • The users express also significant interest for ionospheric specification mainly presented by MUF maps and less by maps of electron density (preferable time resolution: on demand and daily). • Interest was revealed for products concerning the forecasting of ionospheric parameters, preferably more than one hour ahead. • Special interest was expressed by the majority of the users in receiving warnings and alertsregional maps

  4. Second European Space Weather Week, ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands, 14-18 November 2005 DIAS products and services • Ionograms (from the 8 DIAS stations in a common layout) • Ionospheric scaled parameters (foF2, fmin, M(3000)F2, in ASCII and daily plots) • Daily plot of the Effective Sunspot Number • Electron Density Ne(h) profiles over each DIAS station • Long term ionospheric predictions (maps of foF2, M(3000)F2 and MUF over Europe) • Ionospheric specification in real-time (maps of foF2, M(3000)F2, MUF and Electron Density Ne(h) over Europe) • Short-term ionospheric forecasting (over periods from hours to a few days over certain locations and maps of foF2 over Europe) • Ionospheric Alert Indices

  5. Second European Space Weather Week, ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands, 14-18 November 2005 DIAS prototype Real-time Ionograms provided by DIAS

  6. Second European Space Weather Week, ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands, 14-18 November 2005 DIAS prototype foF2 long term forecasting over Europe

  7. Second European Space Weather Week, ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands, 14-18 November 2005 DIAS further actions • DIAS prototype is under evaluation from the users • DIAS final service will be delivered to the European Commission in February 2006 • A business plan for the viability of the service after the end of the phase sponsored by EC is under development • Several dedicated users meetings for awareness and dissemination purposes have already organized • Next meeting with potential DIAS users will be held tomorrow (15 November 2005) from 15:30 to 16:30, where we will present the DIAS products and services and we will demonstrate the functionality of DIAS

  8. Second European Space Weather Week, ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands, 14-18 November 2005 DIAS evaluation and prospective • DIAS overcomes the problem of the independent operation of European ionospheric stations, unifying the existing data collections and providing nowcast and forecast services for the European region. • DIAS basic products and services and their time resolution cover satisfactory most of the users requirements. Fine tuning adjustments to the users requirements could be made. • Special requests could be the subject of future considerations or collaborations (i.e. maps of the ionospheric parameters for different regions all over the world). • DIAS could primarily serve the needs of SWENET for accurate ionospheric specification and prediction information over Europe. • DIAS has accepted invitations for collaborations with organizations from outside Europe (Australia, USA) and has to envisage this perspective.
