History • 1961 DECUS (Digital Equipment User Society) Founded • 1998 Compaq acquires Digital, DECUS becomes a Compaq user group. • 2000 DECUS U.S. Chapter incorporated as the independent user group Encompass, many worldwide chapters follow suit. • 2002 HP acquires Compaq, and DECUS becomes an HP User Society. • 2008 HP user communities Encompass, ITUG and HP Interex EMEA consolidate to form Connect Worldwide.

  5. DECUS Australia inc. At around the time of our inception… DEC PDP-1 - the first minicomputer. It sold for US$120,000. It was transistorised and the first commercial computer equipped with a keyboard and monitor. Max Burnet Joined Digital Equipment Corporation 1967 Managing Director 1975 – 1982. Managed DECUS for 20 years Bill Thorne - Secretary ’92-’95 + many others… (SIG, LUG, Leadership etc).

Decus - Encompass • We have survived MUCH change… • Decus • Symposium • Active LUGs & SIGs across Australia • Engineering Contacts • Paid Staff, Permanent Office, Library, Media Conversion • Encompass • Our user-base moves to Contracting, Outsourcing, Consultancy • Vendor Consolidation (the BUNCH club) • Vendor product divesting (Databases, Applications, Networks, Storage etc)

Encompass Australia inc. • Since we started, way back in 1961… • We now have a vastly different membership base (Contractors, Management, & Retirees) • We have survived two Vendor changes • We now sit in a different [Multi-Vendor] Customer situation • The WWW has had a huge impact on how people access information • cf OZTUG – grew into a specialised body, membership of which is almost essential for any professional in the NonStop space.
