BacteriaChlamydia trachomatis, • Once detected, easily overcome • A disease of men and women that starts with a mild burning sensation on passing urine can often progress to painful inflammation of the urethra or fallopian tubes and ultimately to permanent sterility. • Half of all cases of urethritis are due to chlamydia

  5. Urethritis Urethritis is an inflammation of the urethra. The urethra is the tube responsible for carrying urine from the bladder out of the body. • Half of all cases of urethritis are due to chlamydia

  6. Who can get infected? • Any sexually active person can be infected with chlamydia. The greater the number of sex partners, the greater the risk of infection.

  7. How common is it? From 2 to 7% of sexually active Youth areinfected. It is also commonly called “ the Clap”.

  8. What are the symptons? For Women : • New or different vaginal discharge • Burning sensation when urinating (when you pee) • Lower abdominal pain, sometimes with fever or chills • Painful sexual intercourse • Bleeding between periods • Bleeding after having sex

  9. For Men : • Penile discharge (clear or whitish liquid coming out of the penis) • Itchy feeling inside the penis • Burning sensation while urinating (when you pee) • Sore and/or swollen testicles

  10. What do I do? • Visit your G.P. • They will take a urine sample and check if your symptoms aren’t just a urinary tract infection. • If an STI is suspected they will simply take a swab sample.

  11. How is it treated? • Anti-biotics by mouth.

  12. And that’s it……. • Or is it? • No……..you must inform anyone you might have passed it to.

  13. What if I leave it without treatment? • Damage to the fallopian tubes and sterility.

  14. How far back do I have to go? • Chlamydia is known as a "silent" disease because about three quarters of infected women and about half of infected men have no symptoms. If symptoms do occur, they usually appear within 1 to 3 weeks after exposure.

  15. In pregnant women, there is some evidence that untreated chlamydial infections can lead to premature delivery. Babies who are born to infected mothers can get chlamydial infections in their eyes and respiratory tracts. Chlamydia is a leading cause of early infant pneumonia and conjunctivitis (pink eye) in newborns.

  16. How can Chlamydia be prevented? • The surest way to avoid transmission of STDs is to abstain from sexual contact, or to be in a long-term mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who has been tested and is known to be uninfected.
