NanoLab Membership • When you are ready to activate your NanoLab account: • Bring a fully completed New Member Form to the Reception Desk in 520 Sutardja Dai Hall. • Your account information will be entered in the Mercury database and a pending status account will be requested. • You will then receive an e-mail notification (usually within 24 hours of submitting your form) that you may take the on-line safety test. • The online test is administered daily from 8 AM – 11 AM and 1 PM – 4PM in the NanoLab Office (520 Sutardja Dai Hall). • If/when you pass the test, you will be automatically qualified to access the NanoLab, and a request to enable card key access will be submitted to the Sutardja Dai Hall Building Manager. • If you do not pass, you will be notified that you must review orientation materials and retake the test.

New Member Form must include: Login Name - must be between 4-8 lowercase letters Password - must be exactly 8 characters, and contain letters, digits, and special characters Campus telephone number and home/cell number Current home or campus e-mail address (all notifications regarding account activation will be sent to your current e-mail address). Please be sure the e-mail address is written clearly. Name of advisor and research group Billing info: campus COA, LBNL IUT, or BNLA/Sundry PO UCB Student ID#, or UCB Employee ID#, if applicable Card Key# (1st six digits on the back of your card), if applicable If you are not in the UC System, notify Neal Melton in the NanoLab Office and he will provide specific instructions (nmelton@eecs.berkeley.edu, 510/809-8674). NanoLab Member Photo • When you receive an e-mail stating that you have passed the safety exam, • please go to the reception desk in 520 Sutardja Dai Hall to have your photo taken. • This is for an internal photo gallery in our Mercury system • Accessible to lab members and staff only • Photos are to improve communication among researchers and enable ready identification of your colleagues

  5. Obtaining Supplies • On your first day at the lab, a plastic box for storage of labwear, name-badges, and materials will be issued by NanoLab staff. • Common supplies and materials (wafers, beakers, tweezers, etc.) are available in the NanoLab office and stockroom. • The item(s) must be checked out and are charged to your account. • If you need special materials or chemicals that are not kept in stock, a variety of catalogs are available in the office from which you can order the item(s) you require. • NanoLab office staff often can provide you with catalogs and vendor contact information, but such orders must be processed through your own department and not the NanoLab. Supplies purchased in the NanoLab storeroom are intended for NanoLab use only. • BNLA: Please do not “drop ship” orders to NanoLab. May get delayed/diverted • Office hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM and 1:00 - 5:00 PM.

Test Taking Policy • Most tests must be taken in 520 Sutardja Dai Hall, including written tests. • Use of iPads/laptops/cell phones is prohibited while taking an exam • If you fail an exam the first time you may retake it after 2 hours • Orientation Safety Test (Initial) / Annual Safety Quiz: • If you fail the exam, please carefully review the online materials and NanoLab Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) • If you fail a second time you must review the exam with the Lab Director or designee • Equipment Qualification Tests: • If you fail a second time you must review the exam with the test grader

  7. Telephone Policy • Lab telephones are restricted to local (Bay Area) outgoing calls. • Use the intercom or page system to contact staff/office personnel. Cell Phone Policy • Cell phone use is restricted in the NanoLab • Use allowed only in lobby, gowning area, and in main aisle of west end of the bays (by yellow windows) on both levels of lab • Signals may interfere with and can disrupt the operation of some equipment • Change your nitrile gloves after using cell phones to avoid contamination (CHP 4.6.7)

  8. Review of Laboratory Charges • The billing period for the NanoLab begins at midnight of the 25th of each month • For example, June 25th 12:00AM to July 25th 12:00AM is our July billing cycle • After the 25th of the month, the NanoLab will send out preliminary charges for review by PI’s and/or research administrators. • Members may review their charges through the “Lab History” on Mercury at any time. To ensure proper billing of your lab/equipment use, please review your lab history regularly • If an adjustment is needed (such as equipment or lab time credits): • Report like an equipment problem in Mercury (equip name: “accounting”) • Symptom: “maintenance” • For the adjustment to take place in the current billing period, report the “problem” before the 25th of the month.
