Need For Centers • More than 80,000 units of local government & 20 million small businesses face regulatory challenges • EPA does not have the resources to provide on-site assistance to more than a fraction of the regulated entities • Small businesses and local governments receive environmental information targeted to their needs

  4. History of the Centers Program: • First Centers in 1994: automotive service & repair, metal finishing, paints & coatings, and printing • Result of Congressional Add-on • Developed web-based compliance assistance centers for several sectors • Ten Centers launched in first 5 years; 4 more over next 5 years; Today 16 Centers are in operation.

  5. Why Was The Printing Sector Selected to be One of the First Four? • Size and Scope of the Commercial Printing Industry • Other Initiatives Focusing on Printing Sector in Need of Printing Specific Resources and Tools • Demand Among Technical Assistance Providers

  6. Getting Started • Develop the Team • Subcontract with Industry Trade Association & University • Hire technical staff with Printing Industry Experience • Hire web site developer • Established an Advisory Council • Define our objectives
