  3. Background • The Institute was established in 1993 and has graduated about 1,000 students in the domains of nursing and human biology since its first graduation in 2000. Some of these graduates have continued to pursue further training in Medicine, Nursing and Public Health among other professions.

  4. The main objectives of ISPG are: • To develop an educative system allowing students to learn and transmit efficiently their knowledge; • To develop inter-university cooperation in terms of education and scientific research at national and international levels; • To offer an education which favours equilibrium of the physical potential, mental, spiritual and social development of the student; • To promote competitive education of students considering the needs of Rwanda and beyond. • To interact with and respond to the needs of the community, the nation and beyond, through innovative programs, research and service provision.

  5. Faculty of Biomedical Sciences • Now the Faculty offer a four years’ program leading to the award of a Bachelor of Biomedical sciences with the opportunity to major in Biochemistry [BSc. Biomedical Sciences (Biochemistry)].

  6. Faculty of Biomedical Sciences • The Faculty of Human Biology, now proposed to be re-named as the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences, was established after obtaining the accreditation on 2nd October, 2002 that allowed ISPG to deliver Advanced Diploma level (A1) programs. • The current (2010) student enrolment of the Faculty stands at 231 students with 60 percent females. The Faculty has twenty three staffs of whom eleven (48%) are full time. Among the staff, 11 (48%) hold Masters degrees in various fields and the rest are Bachelor’s holders.

  7. Faculty of Biomedical Sciences • The Biochemistry track shall provide opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding, qualities, skills and other attributes in the following areas: • Knowledge and understanding • Demonstrate understanding of the fundamental concepts, principles and theories of modern biochemistry. • Illustrate a sound knowledge of the major areas of biochemistry. • Demonstrate a level of knowledge and understanding sufficient to secure employment or enter and benefit from further exploration in biological sciences or related areas.

  8. Faculty of Biomedical Sciences • Intellectual Skills • Synthesis of information from a variety of sources (papers, databases, textbooks, lectures). • Interpret and manipulate experimental data, and draw logical conclusions from the results. • Think logically, quantitatively and critically, analyse and solve problems. • Plan, conduct and write a research/report on an independent project. • Practical Skills • Undertake biochemical laboratory tasks and techniques. • Plan experiments and carry them out in the laboratory. • Transferable Skills.
