  2. History of NTUA • It is the oldest educational institution of Greece in the field of technology • It has contributed unceasingly to the country’s scientific, technical and economic development since its foundation in 1836.

  3. NTUA Academic Information • NTUA is divided into nine academic Schools, eight being for the engineering sciences, including chemical engineering, and one for the general sciences. • The personnel of the nine Faculties include more than 700 people as academic staff, 180 scientific assistants and 500 administrative and technical staff. The total number of NTUA employees is about 1350. The total number of undergraduate students is about 8500 and the graduate students 1500.

Activities of the Unit of Environmental Science & Technology (1/4) • Applied research (National/European projects), training • Provision of data to Ministries and other Environmental Authorities and Organizations (e.g. waste statistics, fulfillment of the reporting requirements, etc) • Provision of consultation and scientific assistance to the public and private sector • Organization of conferences, seminars, workshops • Participation in fora, scientific committees and working groups • Participation in national and international networks of environmental informatics

Activities of the Unit of Environmental Science & Technology (2/4) • Development of programs for the integrated management of wastewater • Design, application and optimization of systems for the treatment of industrial wastewater and solid waste • Development of systems for the prevention and control of environmental pollution • Development of guidelines for clean technologies and Best Available Techniques

Activities of the Unit of Environmental Science & Technology (3/4) • Development and application of inventory programs concerning the production of solid waste (municipal and industrial) and industrial wastewater • Development of schemes for the integrated management of municipal solid waste and special types of solid waste (batteries, used oils, demolition waste etc.) • Development of schemes for the integrated management of hazardous waste in local and national level

Activities of the Unit of Environmental Science & Technology (4/4) • Development and application of decision making systems (for the management of solid waste, for the installation of wastewater treatment plants, for the estimation and time-prediction of the pollution in contaminated sites, etc.) • Environmental Impact Assessments • Development and simulation models and other software tools

Main Co-operations of the UEST The Unit of Environmental Science and Technology (UEST) works in close cooperation with: • Greek Ministries • Governmental Agencies • Various European and International Organizations • Foreign competent governmental authorities for providing environmental management inputs for the development and implementation of national strategies and action plans.

  9. Cooperation with the European Environment Agency (EEA) • UEST is member of the consortium of the European Topic Center on Waste and Material Flows, of the EEA being responsible for a number of tasks: • Development of computerized models for the prediction of waste generation and management • Development of waste indicators • Development of emission factors • Determination of the environmental impacts related to waste generation and management • UEST is the National Reference Center of Greece representing the country at the European Topic Center on Waste and Material Flows of the EEA.

  11. Other Cooperations • UEST is a member of the European Waste Club • UEST is also in close cooperation with Eurostat and it currently works on the Development of the Reportnet Systemfor Greece.

Main Relevant Projects (1/4) Greece: ‘Inventory of air emissions, industrial wastewater and solid wastes from the industry and emissions from the central heating’ Main Scope • Planning of a dynamic inventory system • Data collection and registry from the industrial units and the central heating • Development of a database and a Geographical Information System (GIS) • Strengthening administrative and monitoring capacity (Quality Assurance - Quality Control)

Main Relevant Projects (2/4) Cyprus: “Integrated Control of Industrial and Chemical Substances”, LIFE TCY98/CY/167 (NTUA, Ministry of Labor and Social Insurance of Cyprus) Main scope The development of administrative, legal and other arrangements necessary for the monitoring, assessment and control of industrial pollution in line with EU legislative requirements . • Design and implementation of inventories • Design and development of appropriate databases related to the application of Best Available Techniques (BATs) and GIS

Main Relevant Projects (3/4) Mediterranean Cooperation: “Development of tools and guidelines for the promotion of the sustainable urban wastewater treatment and reuse in the agriculture production in the Mediterranean countries (MEDAWARE)” (Cyprus, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Turkey, Greece) Main scope • Promotion of best practices and effective policies • Technical support to the authorities for control and monitoring of the urban wastewater treatment plants • Technical support to the authorities for the utilization of treated wastewater in agriculture • Education and awareness of the public

Main Relevant Projects (4/4) Cyprus: “Development and Implementation of an Integrated System for the Control and Monitoring of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Plants (UWTP) in Cyprus, COMWATER” LIFE 02 TCY/CY/019 (NTUA, Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment of Cyprus) Main scope • Development of a methodology for the control and monitoring of the UWTP • Development of specifications for effective operation of the wastewater treatment plants • Training of the actors involved

Profile of the Project Leader • Prof. Maria Loizidou is a Professor ofthe National Technical University of Athens (School of Chemical Engineering, Head of Unit of Environmental Science and Technology). • She has been the scientific responsible for more than 100 national, European and international projects in the field of environmental and waste management aspects. • She has published more than 250 articles in both international scientific journals and international conferences.

  19. Working Group of UEST in relation to the field of the SK/02/IB/EN/02 project • The working group has strong background in the field of IPPC. The perfect coordination/ communication among the personnel creates a highly productive team which already developed and established similar system in Greece and Cyprus
