  2. Agenda • Discuss Formative Assessment Probes / New Resources • Update on Next Generation Science Standards.

Formative Assessment Strategies Learning Targets: • I can describe examples of practical strategies to use in the classroom to encourage student engagement and close achievement gaps. • I can describe various tools to use during lessons to gather evidence of learning and keep students on track.

  4. A way to elicit evidence of learner’s achievement There is now a complete set in my office ready for check out! We have also ordered each of you the first 3 volumes!

Ice-Cold Lemonade • Working with a partner, determine who will be 1 and who will be 2. • Read the probe & determine the type of question • Diagnostic or Discussion • 1’swill examine the 8th grade, and 2’s will examine 11th grade student responses. • With your partner, compare responses for choice A, B, and C • Differences in grade level

Ice-Cold Lemonade • Using the Teacher Notes and your experiences, how can the responses inform your next steps in instruction? • What types of experiences will students need? • Will they all need the same types of experiences • What about students that has the correct “answer,” but has faulty reasoning?

  7. Formative Assessment Probes Uncovering Student ideas in Science “A good idea – poorly implemented – is a bad idea” Ainsworth and Viegut (2006, p. 109) • Key to successful implementation of an instructional resource…be purposeful.

  8. Purposeful use of Probes Integrate assessment, instruction and learning • Engagement and readiness • Eliciting prior knowledge • Exploration and Discovery • Concept and skill development • Concept and skill transfer • Self-assessment and Reflection

  9. Improper Use of Probes • Bell ringer. • A graded assignment • A review game • Just telling the kids the “right” answer without providing the necessary experiences • Not using the student responses to inform instruction • Just looking at their “answers” and not their reasoning

  10. Take a Pledge I pledge to be purposeful in my use of the formative assessment probes and I will not take part in any of the improper uses.

  12. WHEN CAN WE SEE THEM? • First public draft is expected by end of March or early April • New standards are expected to be completed by Dec. 2012

SCIENCE FRAMEWORK THREE PARTS Dimension 1: Core Disciplinary Ideas Foundational content ideas in four disciplines: Life Science, Earth/Space Science, Physical Science, Engineering & Technology Dimension 2: Cross-Cutting Elements Major ideas that have application across all domains of science Dimension 3: Science and Engineering Practices Practices scientists engage in as they investigate the natural world

  14. What will the new standards look like? Foundation Box • The Foundation Box contains the standards unpacked! • The Connection Box contains vertical connections, connections across the standards, and your ELA and Math connections. • The standards are also color coded in BLUE, ORANGE, & GREEN. • Each standard also has an assessment boundary . This will be indicated in RED. • Each standard is also expected to be interactive online!
