Statements • Teenagers are savvy enough to know about the effects of tanning • Parents, not legislators, should be responsible for their teenage children’s tanning activities • Tanning facilities should warn users about the potential risks of tanning • Teenagers, not their parents, should be responsible for their own health decisions

  3. Statements continued • Knowing about health risks would not influence teenagers to make responsible decisions • The legal age to buy cigarettes should be increased to 21 – the same as alcohol • Laws should be implemented in every state that prevents smoking from all public areas

Skin Cancer Information • Since 2003, 19+ states have passed laws restricting access to indoor tanning to people under 18 years of age • Tanning beds have the equivalent health peril of cigarettes • The tanning industry is a $5 billion a year business • On an average day, more than 1 million Americans use a tanning salon • White women 16 – 49 make up 70% of customers of tanning salons • #1. Statistics • Melanoma is the most lethal form of skin cancer • 1 person dies of melanoma every hour • There are more cases of skin cancer than breast, prostate, lung & colon cancers combined • Skin cancer is most common in women 25 – 29 • 1 in every 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime • #2. Good to know • Prevention • Wearing an SPF 15+ sunscreen daily reduces the risk of skin cancer • 1 or more blistering sunburns in childhood or adolescence increases a person’s chance of developing melanoma later in life 2 times • Positives of sun exposure • Sun exposure (15 min or so per day depending on your skin type) does have some positive benefits • Vitamin D protects against osteoporosis, heart disease, & cancers. It also protects against depression, insomnia & an overactive immune system • # 3. Do you think the risks of sun exposure have drowned out the positive benefits? Explain

Lung Cancer Risks • The most important indicator of lung cancer is smoking tobacco • 87% of all lung cancers in the U.S. are smoking-related • Exposure to second-hand smoke also increases your risk by 20-30%. • Second-hand smoke exposure also increase the risk of heart disease & other ailments • Other environmental factors for lunch disease include: • Asbestos • Radon • Industrial substances • Radiation exposure • Air pollution • TB • Genetics • Military service (exposure to Agent Orange; higher rates of smoking) #4. If tobacco is such a high indicator of lung cancer, why do people continue to smoke?

Lung Cancer Statistics • Lung cancer is the # 1 cause of cancer deaths in men and women in the U.S. & worldwide • It accounts for 27% of all cancer deaths • 2/3 people diagnosed are 65+ so most people are older. The average age of diagnosis is 70. • 1 in 13 men & 1 in 16 women will be affected • Black men are 20% more likely than white men to get it but Black women are 10% less likely than white women to get it • #5. Cancer Facts • Cancer • Overall ½ of all men and 1/3 of women will develop cancer in their lifetime • Breast • Gender is the biggest factor here although men can get breast cancer. • 2/3 women 55+ will get this • White women are more likely than African American women to get it but African Amer. women are more likely to die from it. • Colon • 1 in 20 or 5% of people will get this type of cancer • It is less likely in women than men • Prostate • The most common type of cancer in men • 1 in 7 men will get this during their lifetime. • 6 in 10 are 65+. It is rare under 40 years old. • It can be serious but most don’t die from prostate cancer
