    2. Early Years Born in Philadelphia on January 1, 1752 Her parents were Quakers There were seventeen children, Betsy was the eighth child Went to a Quaker Public School She lived on 239 Arch Street

    3. Accomplishments Made the first flag in 1776 Official flag maker in the Pennsylvania Army She did ship colors for the Pennsylvania State Ships She was a seamstress for an upholstery business

    4. Later Years 3 husbands- John Ross (1st) died in 1776, Joseph Ashburn (2nd) died in 1782 and her 3rd husband died in 1817 She had seven daughters and two died at infancy Died on January 30, 1836 at the age of 84 In the winter of 1777 Betsy shared her home with British Soldiers

    5. Other Interesting Facts The stars and stripes flag was adopted in 1777 by the congress Made a five-pointed star in one snip Her real name is Elizabeth Griscom Ross Buried in three different locations before her final resting place A major bridge in Philadelphia was named in her honor
