  3. Simon Bolivar – The Liberator • ‘George Washington of South America • A Venezuelan Creole • Led army to defeat the Spanish in Venezuela • 1821 led Venezuela to indep. • Next, marched army to Ecuador to gain their indep. • Wanted to unite South America together to fight against Spanish

  4. Jose de San Martin • Born in Argentina…grew up in Spain • Worked closely with Simon Bolivar • Led Argentina, Chile, and Peru to freedom beginning in 1816 • Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, and Ecuador all became known as Gran Colombia

  5. Fr. Hidalgo , Fr. Morelos, Iturbide • 1810, a priest in Dolores, Mexico • Led 80,000 men to the capital – Mexico City • Lost…but the revolution was sparked! • Padre Morelos continued the spark set by Hidalgo • For 4 years Morelos led indep. Movements • In 1821 Agustin de Iturbide…led Mexico to its indep. from Spain (uprisings in Spain weakened their power)

ToussantL’Ouverture • The people of Haiti took advantage of the French Rev. • 500,000 abused slaves worked for the outnumbered French slave owners • Led by Toussant, a former slave himslef, the slaves revolted • He agreed to stop the revolt for the end of slavery • 1/1/1804 Haiti was the first black colony to gain independence
