  1. Newcastle Approach to Targeted Mental Health in Schools

  2. Targeted Mental Health in Schools • Funded by the DCFS this project aims to: • Transform the way mental health support is delivered to children age 5 to 13, to improve their mental well being and tackle problems more quickly • The remit is to develop innovative ways of bringing mental health expertise into schools and to use the available evidence base to deliver the best support to children and families

  3. Rationale for the Project – for children • Children learn better and achieve more when they are feeling mentally secure and healthy, and have the skills to deal with emotional challenges • The incidence of mental health problems has increased since the 1970s – but we know more than ever how to address these problems given the right skills and the right approach • The sooner problems are dealt with the better the outcome is likely to be for the child and family

  4. Aims • Success of programme seen as improved outcomes for: Children, young people and families: • Improvements in the mental health of children, young people and families • Improvements in attendance, behaviour and attainment • Improvements in parents/carers ability to effectively parent their children
