3. Eyewash Update: • We are not to interfere with the FSE contract • Instead, our focus will be how can we facilitate FSE meeting their obligations • Lab access • Schedules

4. Chemical inventory • Chemical inventory turned in on 2/25/11 • Thanks for your cooperation • NPI will be due in April • Who are the contacts?

5. Hazardous Waste Removal • Chemical Analytics, Inc. • Strongly recommended by UGA • Able remove unwanted chemicals based on a specified budget • Would require detailed record keeping on specific chemicals being disposed in the solvent containers

6. Accidents/Incidents: • 2010 OSHA 300A posted on iSHEMs board • Incident: 2/7/2011 • Acetonitrile poured down damaged drain • Demonstrates the need for education on our Business Recovery Plan • Clarification needed on what can go down the drain

7. 911 Protocol Update: • Current instructions are on the Emergency Procedures booklet • If the Health Unit is not notified, the front desk MUST be notified so that emergency responders are allowed in the facility • Floor Wardens will be in charge of crowd control

8. CPR training: • 20-40 slots for training • Train 20 for roughly $500 within a 2 day period • Would like those who take it to be willing to use their services in a building emergency in RRC

9. RRC Safety training: • Approved by UGA • Agreement in works • Cost is FREE!!!! • Information proposed to be covered: • Chemical safety & Right to Know • Chemical categories: How are they listed? • NFPA labels and how they are used • Proper chemical storage: Do’s & Don’ts • The right way to organize chemicals on a shelf • Hazardous waste knowledge • Proper disposal technique and how to prepare for disposal • List of items that do not go or belong down the drain • Laboratory safety • Personal protective equipment (PPE) • Fire safety

10. Annual streamlined chemical fume hood/biosafety cabinet checks • 3 quotes collected from committee members • Turned in to Kelly for next step • Need additional information to proceed • Manual 230 (SHEM manual)- • “Measure Face Velocities Annually: Fume hood face velocities must be measured annually to ensure that their performance is acceptable. Hoods that fail the performance test will be taken out of service until repaired.” • Those not serviced recently may initially be more expensive • No travel fee and 24 hour repair turn around time • Yearly checks will be more in line with quote

11. Chemical Fume Hood • Protects laboratory personnel from exposure to hazardous chemicals • Exhausts to outside of building • Protects against airborne hazards • Subject to annual testing- air flow validation

Biological Safety Cabinets (Biosafety cabinets/ BSC) • Used for work with pathogens & prevents external contamination • HEPA filters protect personnel from exposure • Some exhaust to • outside of building • Protects against airborne hazards • Subject to annual certification • Class I, Class II & Class III

13. Laminar Flow Hood/Clean Bench • Protects work from contamination • Directs a horizontal/vertical airflow through HEPA • Blows into room • Not subject to annual certification • Tissue culture work, pouring media/gels

Safety hood annual inspections:Questions to be answered: • Is FSE responsible for inspecting any of the hoods on an annual basis? • Chemical & biological fume hoods must be inspected annually • How many hoods are in the building? Used to be ~160 • Rooms with hoods not in use- list “inactive” • What time of year preferred for inspection? • Repairs vs. maintenance- proposed new hoods? • Each Unit must still pay for the cost of annual inspection • John Trammell- project to change hoods & cost

Instant emergency broadcast system: • “Nixle was developed as a mass alert system, designed to allow local government agencies, municipalities and emergency service units to communicate instantaneously with citizens in the event of an emergency. “ • Nixle is free as an open instant alert messaging system which will alert via email and cell phone of your choice. Oconee & ACC Police, Athens Tech, and many more use Nixle. • USDA is registered as a Nixle Publisher. Intent to have LSO use Nixle to alert those who have signed up for alerts via email and cell phones of inclement weather and emergencies.
