    2. If you want to be a teacher… You need a: Bachelor’s degree and Teaching credential

    3. What do you need for a bachelor’s degree? General Education Requirements Classes for the Major of choice Total of 120 or more units

    4. What is a Credential Program? Traditionally a two semester program following the Bachelor’s Degree. In some subject areas, students may begin the credential program prior to graduation Includes student teaching Students learn the methodology and practical applications of teaching.

    5. What does a Single Subject Credential prepare you to teach? You are licensed to teach your specific subject matter in grades k-12. Most single subject educators teach their subject in grades 7-12; middle and high school.

    6. What does a teacher need to know? Subject matter and How to teach To teach is to touch the future….

    7. How do you prepare in these two categories of knowledge? Subject Matter General Education Golden Four for Transfer Critical Thinking Speech Math English Major Studies Pedagogy (How to teach!) Credential Program (including student teaching)

Course Prerequisites: EDSC 310 The Secondary Teaching Experience: Participation (3) EDSC 320 Adolescence and Education (3) EDSC 330 Developing Literacy in Secondary Schools (3) EDSC 340 Diversity in Secondary Schools (3) EDSC 304 or 307 (or CSET 133 & 134 if not completing an SMPP that includes the course).

    9. Other Credential Program Requirements Completion of GE and no more than 6 units remaining in the major GPA 2.75 (last 60 units) CBEST- California Basic Educational Skills Test. Subject Matter Competency Experience with youth. Completed application

    10. Subject Matter Competency All Teachers must document to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing they “know their stuff” in their subject area. Single Subject teachers have two options for providing this documentation. State-approved program of study: Single Subject Matter Preparation Program (SSMPP) Or State-approved exam: California Subject Examination for Teachers, (CSET): Single Subjects

    11. What about teaching middle school? No Child Left Behind requires that middle school teachers either have a bachelor’s degree in the subject taught or have passed a subject matter exam in the subject. This has functionally removed the supplementary authorization route that has been used for years to staff middle schools. There is some serious discussion of establishing a 32-unit “degree equivalence” that will comply with NCLB.

    16. Things to Remember: Attend Major Department’s Overview Take the CBEST as soon as possible. Take the EWP Exam (after writing class for the major) File for Grad Check (at 90 units) Attend Education Department’s Overview (1 year prior to entering the credential program) Re-apply as a Post-Bac to be admitted to CSUF after graduation. Apply to Credential Program.
