  1. Honda 8kVA generators – What can they run? So, you’ve figured out that you need a generator that can supply 8kVAs of power and you’ve got your eye on one of the open-frame, Honda generators (a good choice). You’ve gone for this because open-frame generators are much easier to perform maintenance on and you’ve always liked the reliability of a Honda engine. But how much would one cost and could you find any models that have been manufactured in Australia? And even once you’ve narrowed it down, which models come with what bells and whistles and are they something you really need? This article goes through these concerns and, hopefully, will lay them to rest so you can make your final decision on the perfect generator for you. Workshop360 is an Australian company that sells a variety of workshop and industrial products, including generators. They have several Honda 8kVA generators on offer. These are the models that they stock which are manufactured locally (within Brisbane) with Honda engines.

  2. The First Choice – The GH7000 The lowest Honda 8kVA generator price point starts just shy of $2,250 with the GH7000.This model runs off a Honda GX390 and is single phase. It weighs in at 80kg with a heavy duty, extra-large roll frame with dimensions coming in at 76x50x57cm (length, width, height). This generator has a tank capacity of 6.1 litres and chugs along with a noise level of 72dBA (which is a little bit quieter than the noise of a telephone ringing). This is the lower end of the price spectrum, with the other models including three phase power and electric start options, each increasing cost and capabilities. Otherwise, these models are quite similar to this one. Electric Start But do you need the extra bells and whistles of electric starting? To begin with, let’s go over what it is. Rather than having to use the recoil start by yanking the starter cord over and over (though I’ve found generators to be easier than, say, a lawn mower to get started), simply press a button and the generator will start up, electrically. This might not seem like a huge deal, but for some people it’s a necessity more than a luxury. The GH7000E – Electric Start If you’re looking for a model that includes the electric start option, consider the GH7000E Honda 8kVA generator. This generator also weighs in at 80kg but has a slightly larger frame, with dimensions coming in at 85x57x60xm (length, width, height), and costs $2,771. This is a difference of about $500 but it can in part be accounted for by the difference in frame size. Customisation options are also available, so it’s possible to request the smaller frame, which would mean the only extra cost is from the electric start. Though, whether it is possible or not, for some people the added value of electric start to a generator that will last you at least a decade of regular use (with proper care) really makes it a no brainer to go for the electric start option anyway. For instance, if you plan to use this generator as a backup power supply for emergency situations, it can be nice to know you can rely on your generator to start up at the push of a button, rather than swearing in the dark as you yank on an noncompliant cord and your family grows restless with discomfort. But if you’re using this for a worksite to power tools, the recoil start might well be the better option. Three-phase power generators While electric start is pretty straightforward to get the hang of, on the other hand, three phase power may not be something everyone understands. If you already do, you can probably skip over this simplified summary of the difference between single phase and three phase power. In a very small nutshell, three phase power is better for cases where you need a lot of power or a lot of consistent power, but it requires a 5 pin plug, so you can’t plug just any old thing into it.

  3. If you’d like to know a little extra, the difference is that three-phase power needs 4 wires to work, whereas single phase only needs one. In a single phase, AC power runs through the active wire, through the load, and back through the neutral wire. But AC power has dips in the power that’s supplied, just by its nature. The point of these two extra wires in three-phase power is for AC to be supplied from three active wires (through the load, and back through the neutral wire), but so that when the supply from one active wire dips, one of the others will be supplying fully, so they essentially have each other covered. But what does this mean, practically? One of the main drawbacks of this is that three phase power can accommodate higher loads, such as large electric motors, rather than lighting or heating (which is the typical sort of load that single phase can handle). Three phase power is also, in general, more efficient. However, because of the need for 2 extra wires this means the standard 2 or 3 pin plugs (with the first two being the live and neutral wires and the optional third being the ground wire) aren’t going to work with three phase power, which requires special 5 pin plugs. The GH7000-3 – Three-phase and Electric Start But, while you can’t plug your household electric appliances into the 5 pin sockets on a three phase power generator, they will often come with a standard 3 pin socket. Like the GH7000-3, which comes with two 3 pin sockets, as well as the one 5 pin socket for those beefy, three-phase power needs. Otherwise, this model is pretty much just like the others in the GH7000 series. And always remember that if you aren’t one hundred percent sure on whether three-phase power is best for you, it’s best to consult a qualified electrician just to clear up any doubts or confusion you have on the matter. Customisations These standard generators aren’t the only options. The baseline models can be customised to include auto-start, electric start, long range fuel tanks (LRT), wheel kits, or otherwise altered to meet worksite compliance restrictions. Now that you have a foundation for the options available, you can pick and choose to get the perfect Honda 8kVA generator for you!
