  1. Common Core & Science and the Next Generation Science Standards

  2. How does Common Core apply to science? • What do you think? • Math- 8 practices • Literacy- speaking, listening, reading, writing

  3. 8 Math Practices- What connections do you see? • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. • Reason abstractly and quantitatively. • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. • Model with mathematics. • Use appropriate tools strategically. • Attend to precision. • Look for and make use of structure. • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

  4. Reading and Writing in Science • Look at the CCSS reading and writing standards for science • Highlight standards that are easily implemented

  5. What Should Be Happening in Science… • Listening and speaking- Students should be hearing and using both content vocabulary and academic language. • Reading- Students should read nonfiction text including text including trade journals. • Writing- Students should be using science journals or notebooks (this can be done digitally) to record their observations, data, and thinking. • Mathematics- Students should be applying mathematics and computational thinking during science investigations.

  6. Essential Elements of a Science Notebook- Evidence of Student Thinking • Prior Knowledge- I think…, I predict…, I hypothesize… • Gathering Data- I saw…, I drew…, I observed…, I measured…, I recorded…, I charted…, I graphed… • Making Sense of Data- I think…because…, My hypothesis was…because..., The data/graph shows…, I calculated..., I conclude …, Based on the evidence... • Metacognition- I learned…, I wonder…, My next steps…, My thinking has changed…, This reminds me…, Further questions to explore…, Other ideas…

  7. Next Generation Science Standards- Summer, 2012 • Based On Next Generation Science Framework- National Academies Press • 8 science and engineering practices • 7 crosscutting concepts that unify the study of science and engineering • Core ideas in 4 disciplinary areas: physical sciences, life sciences, earth & space sciences, and engineering, technology, and applications.

  8. Why Science? Why Now? • Previous documents from the National Research Council (NRC) and American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) used to guide science education are over 10 years old • New developments in cognitive science • Rapid advances in the natural sciences and engineering • Call for new, internationally-benchmarked standards

  9. The Framework and Standards Will: • Impart a coherent and sharpened focus on the core ideas of the major fields • Take into consideration the knowledge and skills required for science literacy, college readiness, and for pursuing further study in STEM fields • Integrate conceptual knowledge and science practices • Base decisions on evidence—to the degree possible—as well as on professional judgment • Reflect the expectations that high-performing countries hold for students • Provide a platform for the development of aligned, high quality assessments, curricula and instructional materials.

  10. Next Generation Review • Look at the Next Generation Overview- practices/ themes/ core ideas • Discussion
