  1. The Kennedy Inn Built in 1881 by Angus Kennedy Located 218 Water Street, St. Andrews N.B. Renamed “The Shiretown Pub” under management of Ian and Leni McKay in 1961. Today it is named “The Kennedy Inn Shiretown Pub”, but commonly known as “The Kennedy”

  2. Originally consisted of: • Dining room for 75 people • 52 guest rooms • 50 feet wide and 104 feet long • Today offers 26 guestrooms, formal/ • Casual dining and acts as one of 3 pubs • In St. Andrews. Canada’s first summer hotel 2 verandas offering a downtown view of St. Andrews and the Passamaquoddy Bay

  3. Below is a later view of the Kennedy from Market Square. The Kennedy is located in the heart of St. Andrews. Located on Water Street and directly across from Market Square. To the left is the old fire station, now made into a government building with public washrooms.

  4. EXTERIOR • Main Architecture Elements: • Pediment (triangle near roof) • Multiple stories. Each story shows its • purpose and significance. • Columns on the verandas • Rectangular windows (many of them) • Extreme symmetrical design • Hipped roof • Pilasters on veranda and found within interior design as well. • Large building • All of these architectural elements infer that this is a building following Georgian Style.

  5. View of first level veranda. Notice the columns and pilasters shown in this photo. Also take notice of the multi- paned windows. (not necessarily in this case, but can sometimes be used as an indicator of the buildings age). The main entrance to the building is located in the center of this veranda. (Not shown here)

  6. INTERIOR LAYOUT & STYLE This is a view of the Kennedy’s entry way. To the left is a separate room for formal dining (not shown here). Down the hall is a common room to the right is the entry to the Pub. In this picture we can see the utilization of separate rooms with different purposes. This floor pattern reflects Loyalist obsession with order and privacy. Notice the pilasters and cornice lining the doorway and coat room window.

  7. THE SHIRETOWN PUB Notice lack of refinement in this room. It served/ still serves as a Pub and that is reflected in the design. The furniture, wall panels, floorboards and even the window/door frames are made of native wood (not Mahogany). This was not a place for the elite to dwell.

  8. The Library (photo to the left) The Tea Room (photo to the right)

  9. The Dining Room • This room was/is used for formal • dining. • The interior design reflects Georgian • design and Loyalist taste in many ways: • The portrait of Queen Elizabeth • (maintaining ties with the British • Monarchy) • The pastel yellow colour used. • The cornice around the top of the • wall and lower wall to create a border • around the room. This room appears very different from the Pub, because it would be a place of elite social gathering (even though there is only about 10 feet separating the rooms).

  10. The Bedrooms Notice the mahogany furniture reserved for the private bedrooms. Also again we see the pilasters around the fireplace with a well defined mantle.
