  2. Who shot at me? • Remember 1C or Physics 4A Ballistics? • We know the role of calculus in this realm • Lets work backwards!

  3. A clip from Numb3rs Pilot – Scene from Numb3rs

  4. Geographical profiling

  5. The math behind the magic • iand j are the rows and columns of a map, respectively • n is the number of the crime (1= first crime, 2 = second crime...) • c is the total number of crimes • B represents the size of the buffer zone • k is a constant • Phi, f, and g is determined by checking against past crime data

  6. The math behind the magic • The probability of crime locations decreases as the distance from the hot zone increases (inversely proportional),  shown by first fraction • Second fraction is the difference between the buffer zone and the locations of the crimes

  7. Kim rossmo • Mid 90’s developed as a grad student at SFU • Now used to profile • Human Attack patterns • Hunting patterns of Great White Sharks • Computer Application – Rigel • geographicprofiling.com http://www.geographicprofiling.com/geopro/krossmo.pdf

  8. Hi, I’m TV’s David Krumholtz. Want more examples of math’s role in solving crimes? Check out my hit television show Numb3rs! Can I haz moneys plox? wikipedia.org/wiki/Geographic_profiling
