  1. AS Resistant Materials Design Section (B) EdExcel

  2. Designing • Range of skills: • 2D • 3D (isometric, perspective) • CAD

  3. Sheet 1 • Layout Design Brief Specification Inspiration Brief and Specification

  4. Design Brief • Digital camera are all very similar and many take little account for the wide range of activities and people that use them. • I am going to design and model an innovative digital camera. The camera must be ergonomically comfortable to use, innovative and appeal to a wide market.

  5. Specification • Purpose • 1.1 To design a camera that is comfortable to hold • Function • 2.1 It must be able to be held in the hand(s) • 2.2 It should be durable enough for it’s purpose • 2.3 It may be able to stand freely • Form • 3.1 It should be aesthetically pleasing • Performance • 4.1 It should be comfortable to hold when in use • 4.2 It should be comfortable to carry • Safety • 5.1 It should be safe for a range of users both young and old • Materials & Manufacture • 6.1 It must be suitable for batch production

  6. Inspiration • Images /sketches

  7. Key points • High quality, focused work • Use different design approaches • Apply knowledge of materials, components, processes and techniques. • Design cycle • Design – model - review

  8. Evaluating / Annotating • Label the designs • Show alternatives • Show zoomed in views • Explain the designs • What is good/bad and why (Strengths and weaknesses)

  9. Modelling • Use modelling to test features (like proportions, scale, function, sub-systems etc) • Modelling can be 2D or 3D and use traditional or other materials (including CAM). • Modelling must be presented using clear, well-annotated photos.

  10. Page 2 & 3 • 3 ideas (1 per third of a page – 6 altogether) • 2D designing • 2D model(s) • 3D design (in places)

  11. Pages 2 &3 • Layout Initial Ideas

  12. Pages 4,5 and 6 • Choose 3 ideas • Develop 1 per page • Show: • Developments/ alternatives • Zoomed in views • Evaluation / compare with spec / opinions (use ACCESSFM) • Overall conclusion • Show details of: • Materials • Components • Manufacture

  13. Pages 4,5 and 6 Materials Components Manufacture Evaluate / compare with spec / opinions Explain / annotate Develop / give options / alterations conclusion Isometric design from initial ideas Photos of models Other options 2D/3D views Zoomed in views Isometric design through development - labelled Development

  14. Page 7 • Chosen idea • Further development through modelling / inspirations • Final model (from 3D printer) • Full details of manufacture & materials
