  3. UNOOSA and the SDGs Access to space Initiative Space is a cross-cutting technology, contributing in one way or another to the achievement of all 17 SDGs

  5. Trustworthy data will transform the world • Reliable and timely and granular data is needed to show progress in achieving targets of SDGs • Good indicators are needed to monitor the positive or negative trends towards achieving the SDGs

  6. UN-SPIDER Technical Advisory Missions reveals… • Many developing countries still struggle to compile basic economic and social statistics • Capacity to produce these new indicators is questionable Challenge About a third of the required SDG indicators are from areas outside traditional official statistics

  7. A step further – use non-traditional sources of data – Earth observation • Role of Earth observation and geospatial data is recognised in supporting the achievement of the SDGs by UN(UN resolution 70/1) • Europe case: • 65 of 169 indicators directly benefit from European GNSS and Copernicus applications – either helping monitor the status of the SDGs or actively contributing to its fulfilment

UNOOSA Publication Supporting the Sustainable Development Goals: Building blocks towards the 2030 agenda • In January 2018, UNOOSA and European GNSS Agency (GSA) published a report that investigates the role of space technologies in fulfillment of SDGs • Research found that 65 of the 169 SDG targets(almost40%) are reliant on Copernicus and EGNSS space systems. • This report is supported by 38 cases and best practices exemplifying how space technologies contribute to achieving the SDGs • If these practices were implemented on a larger scale, they would contribute to the achievement of SDG targets ahead of their deadlines

UN-SPIDER Knowledge Portal • Provides information about how space-based data can support the entire disaster management cycle • Highlights relevant developments in the community through regular news articles • Facilitates discovery of data useful for addressing specific natural hazards • Supports learning process to get from data to knowledge through e.g. • Application examples • Step-by-step workflows for downloading, processing and analyzing data in various programming languages and software packages (Recommended Practices) • Curation of existing in-person and online learning opportunities (MOOC, webinars, etc.) to facilitate discovery for those interested in strengthening skills www.un-spider.org

UNOOSA & GEOSS Portal • UNOOSA become data provider on Group on Earth Observations System of Systems (GEOSS) Portal in May 2018 • Data sources from UN-SPIDER Knowledge Portal made available through GEOSS Portal • Data sources on Knowledge Portal are reviewed and curated to ensure relevance to disaster management professionals
