Detail Design Review Mason Verbridge Evan McNamara Steve Fleischmann ArtemSivak P11032
Outline • Objectives • Electrical Rundown • Mechanical Rundown • Feasibility Analysis • Preliminary Test Plan • Updated Risk Plan • Conclusion
Objectives Obtain approval (from all stakeholders) regarding the process and selection of a detailed electrical and mechanical design.
Electrical Rundown • Hardware Investigation • 3 remotes ordered and inspected • Board size, additional features noted • 'Pen style' remote was chosen for use in the unit
Electrical Rundown Board functionality • 1.5V AAA battery is boosted to supply 5V for the microcontroller • Power electronics behave favorably with 3V applied • Removed Laser and associated button • Attempting to remove antenna portion of board to reduce size, use a non-PCB antenna if needed
Electrical Rundown: Power Consumption • Assumptions • Average time spent on a slide is only 30 seconds. • A button press (Transmit mode) lasts 1 second. Information 1. 3 Modes of Operation: Transmit, Wait, Sleep 2. Each mode uses drastically less power. 3. System spends 20 seconds in Wait mode. 4. Average time spent on a slide is ~3 minutes. • Background • Current measurements taken over a range of operating voltages. • Battery range determined by functionality at 30 feet. Calculations:
Electrical Rundown Button Investigation • Small, momentary, return-to-center buttons were desired for initial testing • Digikey searches yielded many small-sized options • Trip to Goldcrest yielded mostly larger sized options
Mechanical Rundown • Based on Systems Review, 2 prototypes have been created to test for button functionality. • Thirteen Deaf/Hard of Hearing students were asked to provide feedback. Here are the results...
Mechanical Rundown We used the opportunity to get feed back on the wristband regarding ASL interference: Do you feel like the wristband hinders your ability using ASL?
Mechanical Rundown Feedback End Thoughts • Most Liked Button Type = White Buttons on the Top Face • Misunderstanding of the Device's Ending Size • Complaints about the device being distracting during signing Based on the feedback, our focus should be: • Recessed, dual (two-button) press-type button configuration oriented on the top face. • Minimization of size and distraction factor/flare.
Mechanical Rundown Primary Model Recessed Two Push-Button Design • Pros • Easy to Press Buttons • Recessed to prevent • false triggers • Swivel Band Mounts • for extra comfort • Single case for extra • strength
Mechanical Rundown Alternative Model • Pros • Smaller Housing • Possible better wrist conformity • Cons • Vertical Configuration • Easier Damaged? • Bad Fit for small wrists
