  7. New Departmental Initiatives Advancing American Kidney Health Ending the HIV Epidemic • Speaker notes: • [2:18 – 2:27 p.m. – 9 minutes] • As many of you know, earlier this year the Department announced the “Ending the HIV Epidemic: A Plan for America” initiative seeking to reduce new HIV infections to less than 3,000 per year by 2030. The initiative will focus initial efforts in 48 counties, Washington, DC, San Juan (PR), and seven states with substantial rural HIV burden. • BPHC is working with our HRSA partners on finalizing a NOFO for release later this summer, so stay tuned. • In the mean while, feel free to visit BPHC’s newly updated HIV and Health Center Promising Practices webpages for HIV data and resources. • Also, on July 10th, the White House launched the Advancing American Kidney Health initiative seeking to improve the lives of Americans suffering from kidney disease, expand options for American patients, and reduce healthcare costs. • Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney disease in the United States.  Approximately 1 out of 4 adults with diabetes has kidney disease and patients with poorly controlled diabetes are at increased risk for chronic kidney disease, a condition which can cost approximately $70,000 to $90,000 per patient per year. (United States Renal Data System, 2013). • Routine screening and monitoring of blood glucose levels with hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) tests as well as foot and dilated eye exams have been shown to help prevent or mitigate complications of diabetes, including diabetic neuropathy, retinopathy, vascular, and kidney disease. • Health centers already play a critical role in promoting diabetes management, and preventing kidney disease. Last year, health centers cared for over two million adult patients with diabetes and nearly one-third of them had poorly controlled diabetes (defined as HbA1c >9% or no test within the year). • In the coming year, BPHC will look to expand its Diabetes Quality Improvement Initiative efforts to further support kidney health.
