What do we mean by SG and why it is important to talk about it • Social Good (or common good) is generally defined as a good or service that benefits the largest number of people (society) in the largest possible way • Most people perceive education as a social or common good • But let us examine how education benefits society in the largest possible way I.Papadopoulos, Changing Lives through Mobility and Cross-border Cooperation: People and Culture, 10-02-2016, London

According to LTRP, the first principle of effective education and learning, should be: • To equip learners for life in its broadest sense. Learning should help individuals and groups to develop the intellectual, personal and social resources that will enable them to participate as active citizens, contribute to economic development and flourish as individuals in a diverse and changing society. Aristotle teaches that the highest human good is ‘eudaimonia’ (happiness, well being) • To achieve ‘eudaimonia’ human beings must live a virtuous life • It follows then, that social or common goods such as education should be helping people to live virtuous lives How does SG relate to education I.Papadopoulos, Changing Lives through Mobility and Cross-border Cooperation: People and Culture, 10-02-2016, London

How should education do that? • Prudence (phronēsis): the ability to govern and discipline oneself by the use of reason • Justice (dikaiosynē): fairness • Temperance (sōphrosynē): the practice of self-control, restraint, moderation • Courage (andreia; tharos): fortitude, forbearance, strength, endurance, and the ability to confront fear, uncertainty, and intimidation • Compassion (symponia): understanding the suffering of others and wanting to do something about it. My ERASMUS story…and probably that of thousands others • Being involved in ERASMUS projects has enabled me and my colleagues to create some useful outputs related to intercultural education. • But the benefits go beyond the outputs.
