  3. Attendance • School gates open at 8:45am • Registration at 8:50am • School finishes at 3:10pm Absence • Ring school as soon as you can. • As a school we aim for all children to achieve 100% attendance. • May/June (End of Key Stage 1 tests and phonics check)

  5. The Curriculum • English – Daily sessions, skills-based and topic-based focusing on a lead text each term (Seasons/Little Red Hen, The Great Fire of London). • Opportunities to practise and apply skills, knowledge and understanding acquired through English in other curriculum areas. • Guided Reading - Daily sessions and weekly lesson focused Comprehension Skills. • Letters and Sounds and Spelling- daily sessions, weekly spelling test.

  6. The Curriculum Topic work – curricular links, making links with other subjects. (Seasons, The Great Fire of London) Here are some examples of curriculum links: History- Timeline of events Geography- Where is London? Locate on Map ICT - Research The Great Fire of London Art and Design - Studying Artists, creating buildings in different media. Design Technology - creating and following recipes to bake bread. PSHCE- Me and Keeping Safe.

Handwriting • Cursive Script This is where all letters start and (most) finish on the line, with a few exceptions. • Letters taught and modelled individually until correctly formed. • Teachers model how to join letters correctly. • Children ideally join letters and use cursive script by the end of year 2 At Garlinge we use the cursive handwriting font for all written work. There are stages that we promote and encourage to enable good legible handwriting. There is firstly a focus on muscle development.

  8. The Curriculum • Mathematics - focus on manipulatives, the recall of factsand reasoning. • Daily sessions.

  9. The Curriculum Trips- each year group will have a main trip (topic linked). We will keep you informed once this is confirmed. Extra-Curricular We have a broad range of clubs at school. These change termly. Some have a small charge to cover the cost of external providers. All clubs can be found on our school website.

Quex Park Forest School For further information about your child’s learning opportunites please visit: https://www.manorhouseforestschool.co.uk/ • Year 1 children will be attending Quex Park Forest School. • Further information, a permission slip and clothing list will be sent home. • Parents are invited to attend a session with their child(further information to follow).

  11. Transition to year 1 builds upon and extends the experiences children have had in the Foundation Stage. Term 1 and 2 Teacher Directed Time (TD) – this can be short whole class teaching or a group led by the teacher. Teacher Initiated Activities (TIA) – provided differentiated activities linked to the learning objective(high expectations and challenges). During this time groups of children will be working with an adult to achieve learning intentions.

  12. Transition to KS1

  13. Term 3 and 4 English and Mathematics lessons, TIA activities reduced to 3 days a week with the other 2 days being TD group and independent activities, developing transition towards year 2. Term 4 By start of term 4 children are to work towards a full English and Mathematics lesson with a whole class input, followed by TD tasks linked to learning. (CT and TA work with groups and where possible check on independent groups)

  14. Expectations The new way in which the Government has asked pupils to be assessed in reading, writing, speaking and listening, maths and science. Emerging-working towards Expected-working at Exceeding-working above

  15. Expectations At the end of Year 1 children working at the National expected level will be at Year 1 Expected. (Green area) At the end of Year 2 children working at the National expected level will be at Year 2 Expected.

  21. Phonic Information Afternoon There will be a chance for parents of Year 1 children to gain further information on how to support your child with phonics and reading at home on 29.9.17. After the meeting there will be a chance for you to support your child in class with their phonics and reading.

  22. Parent Workshops • There will be a chance for parents of Year 2 children to gain further information on how to support your child with phonics and reading at home on 6.10.17. • After the meeting, there will be the chance to observe a Year 2 reading comprehension session.

  23. End of Key Stage 1 Tests Most children take a test in Year 2 which is used to help the class teacher decide a level for the child. These consist of: Maths tests- Paper 1 arithmetic, Paper 2 reasoning. Reading comprehension- textand questions combined, challenging paper. SPAG tests-separate spelling test

How can you help? • Reading (daily, questioning) (Parents/Carers need to sign record book to get it changed) • Spellings/ reading, phonics and blue word books • Mathematics (number bonds, times-tables, money, time and measurement) • Home-School learning book • Learning in everyday life • Key facts about themselves

  25. Keeping to the rules • Rewards for good choices – class rewards, team awards and whole school presentations. • Consequences of poor choices: • Verbal reminder • Visual reminder • Time out in a partner class (5 minutes) • Detention table • Involvement of senior staff/ parents contacted

  26. Keeping Healthy at Garlinge • ‘Healthy School’ status • School meals • Fruit and milk • Water • Healthy lunch boxes • Winter weather

  27. P.E Curriculum PE kit – 2 hours per week. White t-shirt & black (dark) shorts. Plimsolls or bare feet – indoor PE. Trainers – jogging bottoms / sweatshirt – outdoor PE. Clearly label all clothing. Earrings and jewellery must be removed and long hair tied back.

  29. Communicating with Parents Newsletters will be sent home at the start of each term. There will also be additional information available on the school website. There is also a child zone where your child can access fun games and learning activities: www.garlingeprimary.co.uk. We will keep you informed of relevant dates for the diary so please keep a note of these. Parent evenings will also keep you informed. If you have any concerns regarding your child you can book an appointment to see your child’s teacher.
