  3. DO NOW Write a short paragraph that explains what all of these movie quotes have in common: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” – Ferris Buller’s Day Off “The Dude abides” – The Big Lebowski “The thing is Bob, I’m not lazy, I just don’t care”-Office Space “Just keep living…”-Dazed & Confused

  4. Taoism All of these quotes express the basic principles of Taoism. “Go with the flow” So what is Taoism?

Taoism • Founded by Lao Tzu • Very little is known about his life • Central text is the Tao Te Ching • Only two books have been translated more often than the Tao Te Ching • The Bible • The Bhagavad Gita • Some scholars believe it arose around the 5th Century B.C. • Philosophy is completely opposite of Confucius (more on him tomorrow)

  6. Taoism Lao Tzu believed in the individual, subjective truth, inaction, and a life lived in harmony with the Tao “The Way”

  7. Taoism In it’s most simplified terms: Life is an interrelated system, that all parts fit together harmoniously, and that this whole system is moving through time, simply flowing along like a vast river.”

  8. Taoism Each group will examine the following passages in the reading: Group #1 – 1 & 15 Group #2 – 19 & 20 Group #3 – 28,29 & 36 Group #4 – 42 & 43 Group #5 – 47 & 48 Group #6 – 75 & 81

Taoism You will present your passages to the class. • Paraphrase the passage • Make note of any literary elements • What type of imagery does Lao Tzu use in the passage? • How does it reflect the idea that we should “go with the flow”? • How can we apply the Lao Tzu’s principles in our own life?
