Biographical Information on Louis XVI • Louis was born on the 23rd of August 1754 • He became king at the age of 19 • Parents died during childhood • He was an intelligent student • He was also proficient In hunting and horsemanship • He was a deep Catholic • Courageous but lacked leadership qualities

Biographical Information on Louis XVI Cont. • He was mainly unprepared for the French throne at his age • He married Marie Antoinette (daughter of the Emperor of Austria) in 1770 • The marriage fortified the French and Austrian alliance • Their marriage was very awkward at first • He had uncommon virtues for royalty for the time

  4. R. J. Turgot • Friend of philosophers and an advocate of reform • Tried to abolish guilds to create revenue • Stopped by opposers and was forced to resign in 1776

Necker and Calonne • Necker was a Genevan banker and was considered to be a financial genius • He financed the American Revolution without raising taxes or debt • His successor was De Calonne in 1783 • He tried to tax privileged groups but failed • He believed it was the only solution to France’s debt • MAIN IDEA: LOUIS FAILED TO SUPPORT HIS MINISTERS!!!
