  2. FIRST LEGO LEAGUE WHAT’S “THE BIG IDEA?”

  3. FIRST LEGO LEAGUE FOOD PRESERVATION AND SAFETY

  4. FIRST LEGO LEAGUE WHAT’S “THE CHALLENGE?”

  5. FIRST LEGO LEAGUE To investigate a food and find one way to improve its safe delivery to you.

  6. FIRST LEGO LEAGUE • Think about food • Dairy (milk, cheese, yogurt) • Eggs (raw, cooked, dehydrated) • Fruits (Fresh, frozen, dried, canned) • Vegetables (Fresh, frozen, dried, canned • Grains (rice, pasta, bread, cereal, seeds, nuts) • Meats (fresh, canned, dried, smoked, frozen) • Seafood (fresh, canned, dried, smoked, frozen)

  7. FIRST LEGO LEAGUE • As a team make a list of five (5) food and how each one is stored and how each one got to you • Create a chart • Show the class

  8. FIRST LEGO LEAGUE • As a team, pick one food for your team to research for “the challenge.” • Keep is simple • Fewer than 7 ingredients • Over the next week each teammate must document your food’s “journey” from ground to table. • Identify possible contamination and spoiling problems • Answer essential questions. • Learn as much as you can about each ingredient in your food

  9. FIRST LEGO LEAGUE • FOOD’S JOURNEY • GROUND • HARVEST • PROCESSING • DISTRIBUTION • PREPARATION • TABLE

  10. FIRST LEGO LEAGUE • FOOD’S JOURNEY • GROUND • Was it planted? • Was it born? • Was it hatched?

  11. FIRST LEGO LEAGUE • FOOD’S JOURNEY • HARVEST • Was it picked? • Was it milked? • Was it collected? • Was it caught? • Was it slaughtered?

  12. FIRST LEGO LEAGUE • FOOD’S JOURNEY • PROCESSING • Was it washed? • Was it mixed with other food? • Was it cooked? • Was it frozen? • Was it preserved? • Was it packaged? • Was it inspected?

  13. FIRST LEGO LEAGUE • FOOD’S JOURNEY • DISTRIBUTION • Did it travel? • To a warehouse? • To a market? • How did it travel? • Was it delivered to you? • Did you travel to get it?

  14. FIRST LEGO LEAGUE • FOOD’S JOURNEY • PREPERATION • Was it washed? • Was it mixed with other food? • Was it cut? • Was it cooked? • Was it thawed?

  15. FIRST LEGO LEAGUE • FOOD’S JOURNEY • TABLE • Where was it eaten • Home • Picnic • Party • School • Restaurant

  16. YOUR HOMEWORK DUE NEXT MONDAY Investigate your foods “journey” and identify possible areas of contamination and/or spoiling. Bring at least one area to practice next Monday to discuss with your team. FIRST LEGO LEAGUE

  17. FIRST LEGO LEAGUE FOOD’S JOURNEY As a team, discuss each teammates area of improvement.

  18. FIRST LEGO LEAGUE THE CHALLENGE To investigate a food and find one way to improve its safe delivery to you.

  19. FIRST LEGO LEAGUE SOLUTION/ACTION Once your team has identified the area you would like to focus on for improvement in your food’s journey, each teammate must come up with one idea as a solution to the problem.

  20. SOLUTION/ACTION • Now that your team has decided on a contamination or spoiling problem, develop an innovative solution that will address the problem— • It could be a new idea or an improvement on something already being done. • What is already being done to fix your team’s problem? • What could be done? • What will it take to make your team’s solution happen? • How will your solution help protect your food? • A great solution might take all the imagination and ingenuity your team can muster. • It might seem so obvious that you wonder why the problem even exists. FIRST LEGO LEAGUE

  21. FIRST LEGO LEAGUE SOLUTION/ACTION Choose the best (or combination) of ideas for the solution to the contamination and/or spoiling problem.

  22. PUBLISHING • Teams decide how they will present and (“only use media to enhance live presentation”) • Now, tell others about the problem you researched and exactly how your solution can help. • You choose how to share what you’ve learned. • Give a talk. • Create a website. • Perform a skit. • Make a comic book. • Create a “Prezi” • Create a “Voicethread” • Pass out flyers. • Write a poem, song, or story. • Create a video • Create an animation • Think about who is helped by your solution. • How can you let them know? FIRST LEGO LEAGUE

  23. To be eligible for Project Awards your team must have a live presentation that:  • Describes the contamination or spoiling problem your team chose to research. • Describes your team’s innovative solution. • Describes how your team shared its findings with others. • Uses media equipment only to enhance the live presentation. FIRST LEGO LEAGUE

  24. During your presentation, be sure that your team…  • Describes the food your team chose and what you learned about that food’s journey to your table • Tells about at least one scientist, engineer, doctor, or other professional who is working on the problem • Tells about the research your team did and the information sources that helped to define your problem and solution • Can set up and complete your presentation in 5 minutes or less FIRST LEGO LEAGUE
