  1. THE PLANET AND YOU….

  2. TOPICS OF DISCUSSION • PLASTICS • RECYCLING • FLUORIDE • CHLORINE • PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS • MAKING THE CHANGE

  3. PLASTICS http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErdMnIUCK6Q

  4. DBP • You ingest DBP and other toxic chemicals when drinking and eating form anyplastic container • ALL plastics seep chemicals • The problem is that plastics are showing up in places we have never seen before • They are even in the fish and animals we eat because they mistake the plastic in the environment for food

  5. RECYCLING • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Se12y9hSOM0

  6. FLUORIDE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xP7IPDfC3yg&feature=related

  7. Fluoride accumulation in children • Reduces the Pineal gland production of Melatonin (which should be at it’s highest production levels at early childhood) • The pineal gland absorbs more fluoride than any other soft tissue in the body • Infants ingesting formula mixed with fluoridated water retain 50% of the fluoride in their body. This can decrease bone density

  8. CHLORINE • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDmYJ8yO6Ws • Chlorinated water can destroy polyunsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E in the body while generating toxins capable of free radical damage (oxidation) • Chlorinated water destroys much of the intestinal flora, the friendly bacteria that help in the digestion of food and which protects the body from harmful pathogens. • These bacteria are also responsible for the manufacture of several important vitamins like vitamin B12 and vitamin K. • It is not uncommon for chronic skin conditions like acne, psoriasis, seborrhea and eczema to clear up or to be significantly improved by switching to unchlorinated drinking water and supplementing the diet with lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidus.

  9. PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS • The average American woman uses 12 products containing 168 unique ingredients daily • 25% of American women use 15 or more products • The Average man uses six products for a total of 85 unique ingredients

  10. Although you might use only a dime-sized dollop of shampoo or a swipe of deodorant each time, chances are you are using them every day, and you will continue to for the rest of your life. • In the more than 10,500 different Ingredients used In personal care Products only 11% have been Reviewed for safety

  11. Your skin is the largest organ in your body • It is capable of absorbing up to 80% of everything you put on it • If you were to rub a clove of garlic on your foot, in about an hour you would taste garlic in your mouth- How is this so?? • you are what you eat, and you ABSORB what you put on your SKIN!

  12. Personal care products are designed to penetrate- that’s how they do such a good job of cleaning and moisturizing • Many of these toxic ingredients penetrate all the way down to the cellular level which make them effective but dangerous to your health • A study conducted to determine the levels of phthalates (a harmful chemical found in nail polish and plastics) found that out of the 289 people analyzed, 100% of them had this chemical in their urine.

  13. PLACENTA • Manufacturers use extracts from cow and human placentas • It is then added to anti-wrinkle cream and hair relaxers • They are marketed as “all natural” but can be very toxic • They contain estrogen and other hormones that may spur breast growth in toddlers • The lotion can be transferred from an adult that uses the it to a child

  14. TALC • Used to absorb moisture • Causes irritation to the respiratory system • According to one study in 1990, several thousand infants per year had died or become seriously ill following accidental inhalation of talc-containing baby powder in the past decade • There is a significant link between women using talc in their genital area, and ovarian cancer. The same goes for talc containing blushes and face powder

  15. AUTISM • environmental toxins such as xylene, touluene, phthalates (plasticizers), and PCBs overload an already burdened body, cause seizures and damage, and contribute to the symptoms of autistic spectrum disorders • Phthalates impact boys 4:1 over girls. This may help explain the higher rate in which boys are impacted by autism, as appearance of these chemicals corresponded to the increases in autism rates • When phthalates were produced in the 1960’s only 3% of the people tested positive for them, now 97% do.  It’s possible that the bioaccumulation in the environment, and in mothers, could account for the rise in autism. These toxins are known to can cause birth defects, infertility, brain damage, cancer, and other serious effects

  16. MAKING THE CHANGE • How to tell if the products you use are safe • WWW.cosmeticsdatabase.com • WWW.Teensforsafecosmetics.org • These websites have been constructed by several different health organizations including EWG, Health care without harm, and The breast cancer fund, to help consumers determine the safety of the products they use • Research before you buy. The days of the impulsive purchase are over. When you see a product you might want to buy do your homework first…it could save your health

  17. Make the effort to limit your use of plastic, and support plant based plastics • Reuse everything you can, don’t rely on recycling • Participate in clean up efforts in your community and set a good example for the younger generations • Advocate for your-self! Do research find the facts! And remember that what you do today DOES effect tomorrow!
