Nomura, SUNYCollege of Environmental Science and Forestry, DMR 0907085 We have developed 2 new biosynthetic pathways for MCL-PHA production from glucose. Our lab designs proteins and metabolic pathways in bacteria to produce biodegradable plastics called polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) from renewable carbon feedstocks derived from plants (sugars and fatty acids). The properties of the plastics are dictated by the chemical structures of the repeating units of the polymer and are divided into 3 basic classes shown below: Short-chain-length(SCL) PHAs: 3-5 carbons per monomer unit. Thermoplastics. Medium-chain-length(MCL) PHAs: 6-14 carbons per monomer unit. Elastomers. SCL-MCL-PHAs: 3-14 carbons per monomer unit. Properties are variable dependent on monomer composition.

Alex was the recipient of a NSF EAPSI fellowship to work with my collaborators in Japan. Dr. Nomura is involved in ESF SCIENCE summer camps and teaches about scientific method.
