  1. AP 2003 Free Response Question Rhetorical Analysis

  2. FRQ 2: Common Mistakes After mentioning Alfred M. Green’s full name, for the rest of the document you _________________. African Americans can only be abbreviated to Af. Am. = Not Africans!

  3. FRQ 2: Common Mistakes • Making historical assumptions • Many assumed Green was white or was speaking to an all- white audience. • If you’re not sure, go off of what the beginning of the prompt gives you. • YOU NEED TO READ THE BEGINNING OF THE PROMPT CAREFULLY to quickly determine AUDIENCE, PURPOSE, ARGUMENT, PERSONA (PAPA)

  4. FRQ 2: Suggestions Do not feel like you HAVE TO do 3 body paragraphs- I would rather you have 2 STRONG body paragraphs than 3 weak ones. Work on time management: Many of you did not finish your conclusions! Don’t spend too much time on the introduction or feel like you need to give me the full historical background. Mentioning what is given in the prompt is sufficient.

  5. FRQ 2: Suggestions • Remember to try and tie your TS to the speaker/writer’s PURPOSE • Do not list all of the rhetorical strategies you are discussing in the thesis- simply state the author’s purpose and tone • Keep the conclusion simple: restate the purpose and discuss how the speaker/writer effectively addresses the audience • MYTHOS = Not mithos

  6. FRQ 2: Student Samples • See the PDF for Student Samples

  7. FRQ 2: Observations Many of you are improving on your essay structure. If this is because you are dependent on the green packet, you need to start memorizing the format because you won’t be allowed to use the green packet on my final or on the AP exam. Overall, scores are definitely improving, as is your analysis! I may be grading harder but it is because you’re being given more time + supplementary materials to help you.
