  2. Mt 5:38-42: Retaliation 38 You heard that It was said “Eye for eye and tooth for tooth” 39 Now I say to you Do not stand against an evil person But Whoever slaps you upon the right cheek, Turn to him also the other

  3. Going Beyond the Law 40And to the one who wants to have you judged and take your shirt, give him your outer coat too. • What direction does “going beyond the Law” take? • What does this say about your property? • Not that it is not important • But that God is more important than even your shelter

  4. Military Service 41 And whoever impresses you into military service (AGGAREUŌ) to walk one mile, go with him two. • There is no draft-dodging in the Sermon on the Mount • There is no interpretation of this passage for the nation, except that the nation can expect disciples of Jesus Christ to be good soldiers.

  5. Even Beggars 42To the one who asks of you, give! And the one who wants you to lend to him, do not be turned away from him! • What does this say about the Kingdom of God? • Irresponsible lending practices? • No • The Grace of God has to do with the Righteousness of God. • What do you have to give?

  6. 4 Examples of NON-RETALIATION • Whoever backhands you on the right cheek, turn to him also the other; • To the one wanting to sue you and to take your shirt, release to him also the overcoat; • Whoever conscripts you to walk one mile, go with him two. • To the one who asks of you give, and The one who wants to borrow from you, do not be turned away. personal: humble patience judicial: humble obedience military: humble obedience personal: humble generosity

  7. Law of Retaliation • Designed as a limitation • Designed for a legal, judicial setting • Self-Defense is not retaliation • Mishandling the Text • Motivation

  8. Application: Dealing with Wrongs Within the Family, Mt 18:15-18 • Mt 18 • How do you deal with offenses in the Body of Christ? • Context of vv15-18: Kingdom Humility • vv1-11: become like a child and don’t cause the children to stumble • vv12-14: the shepherd and the one lost sheep • vv15-18: restoring the sinful brother • Obvious Conclusion: Forgiveness

  9. Principles from Matthew 18 • Rulership with Christ in the Kingdom is going to be available to those who grow in humility. • A man or woman of humility and grace is capable of restoring a wayward believer by being honest about sin. • The restoration of that wayward brother is a great cause for rejoicing. • The way we do this is according to a specific protocol. In humility we: • Go in private • Tell the truth • Assess the person's hearing. Repeat with more people—twice • Forgiveness is limitless between the saints because God's forgiveness of each of us is limitless. • A sin against another person IS A SIN AGAINST GOD.

  10. Application: Dealing with Wrongs Outside the Family • What are you losing in Matt 5:39-42? • What do you stand to gain by staying engaged with the unbeliever? • Is this a familiar pattern in the Bible?

  11. Philippians 2:5-8 HUMILITY Have this thinking in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus Who, because he was existing in the form of God, Did not regard it as stealing to be equal with God But He emptied Himself By taking on the form of a slave By becoming in the likeness of men AND Since He was found in the appearance like a man He humbled Himself By becoming obedient even to the point of death Even, the death of a cross!

  12. Philippians 2:9-11 Glory For this reason God also highly exalted him And He gave to Him the Name, which is above every Name In order that at the Name of Jesus every knee will bow, in heaven, and on earth, and under the earth And every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord unto the Glory of God the Father.
